The Student Life Coordinator at the Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind oversees daily life in student housing, supervises staff, and ensures a safe, supportive environment for students with vision or hearing impairments.

Full Job Description

The Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (USDB) invites you to consider an enjoyable and gratifying employment opportunity with our school. We are looking for a knowledgeable, caring and innovative Student Life Coordinator with the Residential Program in Ogden.

Rules and Responsibilities
As a Student Life Coordinator you will:
  • Provide functional supervision to staff in the housing units.
  • Ensure staff knowledge of how to implement written behavior interventions and educational strategies as determined in IEP process, collect data, and interact with students.
  • Train staff as to the expectations of working at USDB.
  • Communicate regularly with all connected parties to the residences: parents, teachers, school nurses, social workers, facilities, school principal, etc.
  • Act as leader in emergency situations.
  • Coordinate residential life schedule which includes homework, Expanded Core instruction and activities.
  • Establish and maintain a professional, yet warm environment for student living and employee working conditions.
  • Observe, evaluate, document, and act upon staff behaviors to encourage helpful behaviors and eliminate negative ones.
  • Drive state motor pool vehicles to transport students and attend off-campus meetings.
  • Perform inspection rounds to secure facility and motor pool vehicles.
  • Meet with the director and other supervisors in pre-arranged weekly meetings.
  • Coordinates operations and management details pertaining to the residences.
  • Ensures that residences are clean and tidy on a daily basis.
  • Understand basic principles of specialized instruction for students with vision impairments.

Minimum Requirements
The Ideal Candidate will:
  • Ability to lead the work of others by monitoring, reviewing, training co-workers, delegating work, etc.
  • Deal with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact and professionalism.
  • Maintain organization of schedules, tasks and student needs that meet Bridges Secondary School expectations.
  • Apply behavioral modification techniques.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Enter, transcribe, record, store or maintain information in either written or electronic form.
  • Maintain a strict level of confidentiality.

    • Employees hired on or after 7/1/2011 and who have never been in the URS retirement system have two options for retirement in the Tier II System.

      • Tier 2 Hybrid Retirement System. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary between both plans (pension and 401(k))

      • Tier 2 Defined Contribution Plan. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary to a 401(k) plan only.

    • Employer contributions to your 401(k) are vested after four years.

  • Paid Time Off:

    • Annual leave and sick leave are accrued at 4 hours per pay period each (4 hours annual, 4 hours sick).

    • Annual leave amounts increase with years of service.

    • We have 12 paid holidays.

Additional Information

  • There are risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g. being subject to possible physical attack. (Risks are related to the possibility of working with students who are non-compliant, self-abusive, and/or aggressive.)
  • This position has strenuous physical requirements such as long periods of standing, walking, recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities and recurring lifting of students with limited mobility. Must be able to lift and carry over 50 pounds.
  • This position is working during the school year, August through May. Sunday 2:30 pm - 8:00 pm., Monday 1:00 pm - 10:00 pm, Tuesday 2:00 pm - 10:00 pm, Wednesday 12:00 pm - 8:00 pm and, Thursday 1:00 pm - 10:00 pm. 40 hours a week.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check.
