Job Description

Summary

This job involves working as a sign language interpreter in a Department of Defense school in Clarksville, Tennessee, helping deaf or hearing-impaired students by translating classroom instructions and conversations into sign language.

You'll also assist with simple teaching tasks, supervise students during meals and play, and prepare learning aids to support their education.

One year of specialized experience includes utilizing American Sign Language to translate conversations between deaf/hearing impaired individuals and translate routine conversations for the purpose of relaying written materials.

The definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). Major Duties:

  • Serve as an interpreter for deaf and/or hearing impaired students.
  • Interpret teacher's directions and messages in sign language to students.
  • Provide supervision of and instruction to students on simple subject matter.
  • Clearly explain concepts being taught and observe students for understanding.
  • Develop audio-visual tactile aides and set up lab demonstrations.
  • Supervise student meal and play times.
  • Distribute and collect testing materials as needed by students.
