This role involves serving as a crisis negotiator for the U.S.
Capitol Police, where you'll help resolve high-stakes situations like hostage crises, barricades, and suicide attempts using verbal de-escalation techniques, while continuing your regular police duties.
It's a part-time assignment for experienced officers who stay calm under pressure and work well in teams during emergencies.
Ideal candidates are current Capitol Police officers with solid field experience who are eager to undergo specialized training to save lives in tense scenarios.
The United States Capitol Police (USCP) safeguards the Congress, Members of Congress, employees, visitors, and Congressional buildings and grounds from crime, disruption, and terrorism.

Must be a USCP sworn employee below the rank of Sergeant; Must have attained the rank of Private First Class and must have completed USCP probationary period by the closing date of this announcement.

This position is located in the Special Operations Division (SOD).
Crisis Negotiators are responsible for responding to and resolving barricade situations, hostage situations, attempted suicides and other crisis situations.
Intensive training is provided to obtain the critical skills and abilities to conduct these responsibilities. This position is a collateral duty assignment.
The incumbent is responsible for assisting in coordinating negotiations and crisis interventions during critical incidents and identifying resources required for the safe resolution of the incident.
Responds to the scene, assesses the totality of the situation, secures the area, gages the threat to hostages or bystanders, and requests additional units as appropriate.
Defuses potentially life threatening situations through the use of proven verbal crisis management techniques.
Responsible for keeping notes, and ensuring that the primary negotiator sees and hears everything in the proper perspective.
Responsible for assisting in coordinating negotiations and crisis interventions during critical incidents. Performs overall duties related to the mission of the USCP and crisis negotiations.
Participates on a continuous in-service training and all other activities designated by the Crisis Negotiation Commander. Multiple vacancies exist.
The number positions will be determined by the needs of the Department. The selection list will be active for a period of one
year from the date of approval of the selection memorandum unless an applicant withdraws in writing his/her application to the Office of Human Resources (OHR). This position is a collateral duty.
