Full Job Description

You will serve as a SHIP OPERATOR SUPERVISOR in the Systems Acceptance & Operations Readiness Department of NAVUNSEAWARCENDIV KEYPORT WA.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

• You will serve as Master of a 186 foot, YTT Class vessel with assigned crew, engaged in Range Operations and off station support in the waters of the Puget Sound and West Coast of the United States and Canadian waters.
• You will be responsible for the piloting and operation of naval vessels in support of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center mission and will be responsible for the safety of the vessels and all persons aboard.
• You will be recognized as an expert for the operation of range craft to support complex test and evaluation scenarios.
• You will serve as the underway Range Officer either through constant liaison with shore Range Officer when on an instrumented range or independently during open ocean or non-range exercises.
• You will be responsible for providing operational leadership and/or technical support for operations.
• You will be required to interface with personnel from the Pacific Northwest Fleet, NAVSEA Program Offices, NUWC Newport, NSWC Panama City, NOAA, other government agencies, and members of the undersea technical community.
• You will be thoroughly conversant with Northwest Range Complex policies and procedures and all applicable maritime rules as defined by the U.S. Coast Guard, Canadian maritime authorities, and the American Bureau of Shipping.
• You will develop policies and procedures as applicable to the safe handling, recovery, and retrieval of weapons and other test units.
• You will supervise complex and mission critical deck operations including deployment of high-value prototype equipment or over-the-side launch of weapons or other test units.
• You will be responsible for understanding all customer requirements and coordinating with the customer on the day of ranging to execute tests.
• You will interpret test plans and must be skilled at applying this information toward directing the efforts of all underway personnel and ship systems.
• You will be responsible for supervising the ships workforce, managing the operation execution, and assigning operational tasks to ship force members.
• You will be responsible for identifying problems and proposed solutions and communicating the impact of these to the Branch Head.
• You will direct the daily activities of the crew during normal operations as well as during routine maintenance, cleaning, and painting, which may be necessary to keep the vessel in shipshape condition.
• You will provide effective and decisive leadership to the crew both during normal operations and any emergency situations, which might occur, such as fire, collision, or abandoning ship.
• You will instruct the crew in the operation of deck or safety equipment on board including pumps, winches, life rafts, fire extinguishers or systems, life buoys and lights, fire pumps and the use of the radio/telephone for emergency distress calls.
• You will be responsible for the on-the-job training and evaluation of contractors and military personnel, determining manpower, equipment, and facility to maintain current schedules.
• You will advise Team Leads on such matters as workload, change in work schedules and equipment requirements, planning efficient use of equipment, material, and manpower; assigning available equipment, material and personnel as necessary.
• You will approve or recommend approval of personnel matters concerning subordinates including performance ratings, leave requests, disciplinary and commendatory actions.
