This job is for a Sergeant overseeing the daily operations of an inmate bus terminal, including supervising correctional officers and inmates, ensuring safety and security during transports, and providing guidance on discipline and rehabilitation.
It involves monitoring inmate movements and safely transporting prisoners of all custody levels for medical trips, transfers, parole, or extraditions.
A good fit would be someone with prior experience in corrections, security, or law enforcement who is reliable, decisive under pressure, and committed to following strict procedures.
Provides direction and instruction to inmates and/or correctional officers in a program of discipline, safety, security and rehabilitation of inmates.
Provides proper instruction on use of keys, firearms, chemical munitions and restraining equipment when necessary. Instructs and counsels inmates as required.
Monitors inmate movement within the confines of the central bus terminal.
Provides safe transport of inmates in all custody levels on PCR, medical, transfers, parole and extradition routes (male and female).
Safekeepers (SK) and special management unit (SMU) inmates are also transported.
Use good supervisory judgement and decisions when transporting inmates.
State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:
A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
SCDC Minimum Requirements:
A high school diploma and eighteen (18) months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for 1/2 of required experience.
Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
