This job is for a sergeant leading a team that investigates serious car accidents in several counties in South Carolina's Midlands region.
The role involves supervising officers, managing accident reconstructions, preparing cases for court, and acting as an expert witness.
It's ideal for experienced highway patrol corporals who are skilled in crash analysis and ready to take on leadership responsibilities.

This position serves the MAIT MIDLANDS Region to include: Aiken, Clarendon, Cherokee, Chester, Chesterfield, Fairfield, Kershaw, Lancaster, Lee, Lexington, Richland, Sumter, Union, and York counties.
Serves as Team Leader of the South Carolina Highway Patrol Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) Midlands Region.
Coordinates and supervises employees assigned to the MAIT Midlands RegionAssumes direct responsibility for and performs administrative duties of MAIT Region.
Ensures compliance with South Carolina Highway Patrol policies. Administers MAIT procedures for orderly operations.Responsible for organizing and directing unit personnel.
Plans, schedules, and determines individual job assignments within the MAIT unit.Must be an expert in the field of Collision Reconstruction.
Required to coordinate the investigation and reconstruction of complex motor vehicle collisions. Assists and reviews subordinates' collision reconstruction reports.
Responsible for reviewing subordinates' reports, documents, and other investigative material for accuracy, legibility, and completeness.Responsible for case preparation and court presentation to appropriate courts and assist subordinates in the prosecution of cases.
Serves as an expert witness in criminal and civil courts.Conducts performance reviews of directly supervised employees and examines those of other subordinates.
State Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency.
Agency Minimum Requirements: Must have at least a high school diploma and the following additional requirements:
TIME IN GRADE – The candidate must possess a minimum of six (6) months of continuous service as an SCHP Corporal by the closing date of this vacancy.
PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION – An applicant must have scored 70 or higher on a Promotion Examination for the vacancy rank within two (2) years of the closing date of the vacancy.
PROMOTIONAL INTERVIEW PANEL – An applicant must have successfully completed a Promotional Interview Panel for the vacancy rank within two (2) years of the closing date of the vacancy.
DISCIPLINARY ACTION – Any individual who is currently serving a suspension for disciplinary reasons or pending the outcome of an investigation shall be considered ineligible to participate in the promotion process.
An involuntary demotion during the preceding six (6) months of the vacancy closing shall be considered ineligible to participate in the promotion process.
EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM – An individual who has received an "Unsuccessful" rating on the employee's most recent performance evaluation or has received a “Performance Improvement Plan” (PIP), formerly known as a “Warning Notice of Substandard Performance,” during the 12 months preceding the closing date of this vacancy shall be ineligible to participate in the promotion process.
RESIDENCY – Selected applicant must comply with the residency guidelines outlined in SCDPS Policy #300.47 (Residency Requirements for Commissioned Law Enforcement Officers) within 4 months of the effective date of the promotion/reassignment.
Section IV. D. 2.
Personnel assigned to a specialized unit (MAIT) shall establish a residence within the Troop or Unit of their assigned area of responsibility or, if residing outside of the Troop or Unit of their assigned area of responsibility, at a location that will allow them to respond to the county in which their assigned Troop or Unit office is located within 45 minutes.
IV. C. Troop/Unit Commanders are responsible for determining compliance with this policy and shall approve or deny requests to reside outside of the area of assignment.
Sergeant may have overnight travel on specials, seminar training, and call outs for major incidents.
