Under supervision participates with and acts as group leader for a maintenance crew engaged in the fabrication, installation, erection, and painting of signals, signs, poles, traffic lane lines, all traffic control devices and appurtenances; operates heavy and special motor vehicles and equipment; does related work as required.
Requirements
Participates in and acts as group leader in the fabrication, installation, erection, and painting of signs, poles, traffic control devices and appurtenances; paints and marks loading zones and other traffic lane lines on the street, pavement and curbs; applies plastic striping; operations lane marking machines. Excavates and prepares ground for erection of sign and signal posts; straightens poles with appropriate tools and insures poles are straight by use of level. Operates compressor and hydraulic jack hammer. Prepares new sign materials; sets up and operates Squeeze Roller Machine which adheres facings onto sign plates; works on the silk screen process of painting signs; places painted sign plates in rack to dry; spray washes silk screens after; places dry signs into inventory racks. Bakes signs; e.g., places sign plates into heat lamp application machine, applies purchased printed faces on sign plates and operates heat lamp application machines, applies City of Boston decal, removes, records and stores completed signs for inventory. Primes and paints “hero signs” repairs damaged plates, resurfaces and re-uses damaged signs; prepares portable sign bases; mixes cement, pours cement, paints bases and poles, etc. in general prepares all signs used in the city. Cuts and drills poles, dismantles and rebuilds old signs; performs incidental rough carpentry work in the building of benches, sign racks and concrete forms. Cleans and maintains vehicles, cleans and maintains shop in an orderly condition. Loads and unloads trucks of all necessary supplies, poles, signs, signals, brackets, nuts, bolts, paint, cement, sand and all types of material delivered. Maintains records of all completed work performed by work crew.
Qualifications
2 years of experience required in related work. Must be a resident of the city of Boston.
