Job Description

Summary

This job involves hands-on work installing, maintaining, repairing, and inspecting traffic signals and related equipment, such as bulbs, timers, wiring, and controllers, under supervision.

It also includes occasional oversight of a small team of up to ten workers doing similar tasks.

A good fit would be someone with practical experience in electrical or signal maintenance who enjoys fieldwork and has the necessary licenses for operating vehicles and equipment in a city environment.

Key Requirements

  • At least 2 years of experience in traffic signal repair or related work (3 years preferred)
  • Massachusetts CDL with airbrake endorsement
  • Department of Public Safety Hoisting License Class 1B
  • Residency in the city of Boston
  • Ability to perform installation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of traffic signals and equipment
  • Skills in troubleshooting wiring, timers, relays, fuses, and controllers
  • Capability to supervise a small group of up to ten employees when assigned

Full Job Description

Under supervision, to perform installation, maintenance, repair and inspection work on traffic signals and signal posts; when so assigned, to incidentally supervise the work of a group of (not more than ten) employees engaged in the same duties; and to perform related work as required.

Requirements

Performing the following tasks and, when so assigned, supervising a group of (not more than ten) men performing the same duties: Answering trouble calls, performing such work as changing bulbs, relays or fuses on traffic signals; when timers are defective, testing and, if necessary, changing or installing new timers. Applying proper tests for troubles on wiring, both exterior wiring and in the control box. Installing any signal equipment, such as complete signal assemblies with posts; or incidental equipment and appurtenances where posts are already installed. Inspecting and making minor repairs and adjustments of traffic signal controllers; inspecting and maintaining police spotlights. Repairing damaged equipment in the shop, including replacing of parts and repairing of relays. Inspecting and maintaining bridge flashers, either AC or DC types.

Qualifications

2 years of experience required in related work. 3 years of experience preferred. Massachusetts CDL with airbrake endorsement required. Department of Public Safety Hoisting License Class 1B required. Must be a resident of the city of Boston.
