Senior Epidemiologist, Molecular Epidemiology Program

This is a home-based (remote) position open to candidates located anywhere in the United States. We welcome talent from across the country to join our team and make an impact, regardless of location.

In-person events or in-office work are infrequent and scheduled in advance. This project position is currently funded through September 29, 2027.

The Opportunity

This role provides senior level leadership within the Bacterial and Mycotic Genomics Unit of the Molecular Epidemiology Program, supporting the integration of bacterial and mycotic pathogen genomics into routine public health surveillance and outbreak response.

You will supervise epidemiology staff, guide analytic priorities, and ensure genomic findings are translated into clear, actionable information for public health programs and local health partners across Washington.

The work strengthens how genomic data are captured, stored, analyzed, and applied to notifiable disease investigations.

This position plays a key role in advancing the practical, operational use of genomic surveillance, improving outbreak detection, expanding analytic capacity, and supporting a modern, sustainable approach to molecular epidemiology across the state.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Supervise and support epidemiologists conducting genomic analysis and reporting for bacterial and mycotic pathogens
  • Establish work priorities, timelines, and performance expectations in alignment with program goals
  • Integrate genomic data analysis into routine surveillance and outbreak investigations
  • Provide technical guidance on genomic data storage and structure within the Washington Disease Reporting System
  • Partner with internal programs and local health jurisdictions to analyze and interpret genomic findings
  • Develop reporting approaches and training materials that strengthen statewide capacity in genomic epidemiology
  • Contribute to advanced analytic projects that improve understanding of bacterial and mycotic pathogen transmission and epidemiology

Why You’ll Love This Role:

  • You’ll influence how genomic data informs real time surveillance and response
  • The work is applied, operational, and directly connected to outbreak detection and prevention
  • You’ll collaborate across epidemiology, laboratory, informatics, and local health teams
  • You’ll help strengthen a growing genomic surveillance program with clear statewide impact
  • You’ll supervise and mentor staff while remaining engaged in high level analytic work

What You Bring:

You are a strong technical molecular epidemiologist who also brings thoughtful, consistent supervision and program awareness.

You are comfortable guiding staff, setting clear expectations, and managing priorities while staying engaged in complex genomic analysis.

You can translate genomic analyses into meaningful epidemiologic insight and communicate findings clearly to a range of public health audiences.

You are motivated by strengthening systems, not just completing projects, and you value work that improves how public health operates day to day.

Minimum Qualifications

There are multiple pathways to qualify for this position. You must meet one of the options provided and any additional criteria listed.

Experience may have been gained through paid or unpaid activities. Please ensure any relevant experience defined below is outlined in your cover letter, resume, and/or applicant profile.

  • Option 1: A Doctoral degree in epidemiology, public health, microbiology, bioinformatics, genomics, or another health science field AND one (1) or more years of experience in epidemiology, genomic data analysis, infectious disease work, or a related public health field.
  • Option 2: Master’s degree from an accredited graduate school with a focus in public health, bioinformatics, computational biology, systems biology, genome sciences, epidemiology, biostatistics, or a related field AND three (3) years working on molecular epidemiology activities within a public health agency.
  • Option 2: Eight (8) or more years of experience in epidemiology, genomic data analysis, infectious disease investigation, laboratory science, or public health surveillance. Experience must include working with data systems, genomic datasets, and command line-based analytic tools.

Additional Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Experience

  • Experience leading or supervising staff
  • Experience analyzing genomic data using statistical tools and programming languages
  • Experience leading or coordinating scientific or technical projects

Preferred Qualifications

While these aren’t required, having them can help you stand out as a candidate.

  • Experience across multiple areas of genomic science. This may include wet-lab microbiology, improving sequencing methods, building bioinformatic pipelines, comparative genomics, evolutionary biology, population genetics, molecular epidemiology, or public health bioinformatics.
  • Experience using cloud-based computing for large-scale scientific or genomic data analysis.
  • Experience analyzing pathogen genomic sequence data and using those results to understand transmission patterns or other epidemiologic features.
  • Proficiency with computational tools and platforms commonly used in molecular epidemiology and bacterial or mycotic genomics, including tools for comparative genomic analysis and visualization.
  • Strong programming skills in R or Python, and comfort working in Unix-based environments and on the command line.
  • Experience mentoring, training, or supervising staff and guiding technical or scientific work in a public health environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
