The Program Support Assistant provides administrative support to the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service which comprises over 90 employees.
In this capacity, incumbent serves as office manager for the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service and is responsible for areas pertaining to the planning and coordinating of administrative activities for all programs of a complex service.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 04/03/2026.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service.
An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials.
If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement.
In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience (GS-06): Specialized Experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.
For this position, you must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Preparing, receiving, reviewing, and verifying documents; maintaining office records; and compiling information for reports.
Assistance work is defined as technical work that supports the administration or operation of the program of an organizational unit, and requires a working knowledge of the work processes and procedures of an administrative field and the mission and operational requirements of the unit.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social).
Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.
Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.

Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary, but may require walking, standing, bending, and lifting of moderately heavy packages.
Ability to perform duties under pressure and switch from one assignment to another without loss of composure. Visual acuity, hearing, and manual dexterity must be good.

Major Duties:
Major Duties include: Additional duties include: data processing, budgeting, purchasing, supply management, and files management.
The employee also performs program support assistance work in support of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service by implementing innovative processes and procedures to ensure operational requirements are met.
The employee utilizes LEAN principles to facilitate process improvement initiatives and eliminate waste within the service.
The Program Support Assistant also serves as the primary host and coordinator for all Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service guests and celebrations and has oversight of the service training and travel budgets.
It is the responsibility of the employee to prioritize tasks and complete in a timely manner so as to maintain smooth operations. Additional day-to-day tasks include, but may not be limited to: 1.
Serves as primary timekeeper for the service, maintaining and posting time and attendance reports and maintains employee leave history records.
This is a complex function for a 24/7/365 operation with multiple T&L's, part-time, intermittent, fee, and trainee staff.PD#93015-0 2.
Serves as a Manager Self Service delegate for supervisors to provide prompt and comprehensive follow up for employee actions in the event that a supervisor is unavailable. 3.
Coordinates all travel for Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service employees. 4. Prepares delegation of authority letters for fund control point and timekeeping access. 5.
Manages, receives, and accessions into the computer system all outside anatomic pathology cases and specimens. 6.
Receives requests for legal cases and packages and ships materials timely and as requested. 7.
Appropriately processes requests for Bone Marrow Transplant Cases and collects all appropriate in-house materials as required with appropriate documentation.8.
Manages and tracks all outside requests that come in from other facilities and ships complete specimens and materials timely.
