This job is for a leader who oversees a small team of mechanics fixing and maintaining powered support systems, like equipment used in Air Force operations, while also doing hands-on work themselves.
It involves ensuring the team meets high standards for quality and safety in a demanding environment.

The primary purpose of this position is to lead three or more workers to accomplish trades and/or labor work on a substantially full time and continuing basis.
Leader is responsible to both perform the work assigned by a supervisor and ensures that subordinates completed assigned work consistent with trades and labor standards.
Condition of Employment Continue This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program.
Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing.
Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security, and public safety.
Incumbent of this position is subject to the possibility of a random drug test.
In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5300 Industrial Equipment Maintenance Group.
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.
Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to lead and supervise.
JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1.
Working knowledge of a wide range of principles, processes, and techniques of trade(s) and/or craft(s) 2. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures. 3.
Skill in the use and maintenance of tools, equipment, and equipment common to trades and labor work performed by the group being led. 4.
Skill in performing the trade and /or labor work of the group being led. 5. Ability to lead a team of three or more labor or trade employees. 6.
Ability to plan and organize work assignments to include determining resources required to accomplish mission.
Physical Effort Daily work for the employee will involve frequent bending, reaching, crouching, standing and arm movement. With this, sometimes they must work in awkward positions and/or cramped areas.
The employee will also be frequently involved with lifting and carrying items weighing up to about 18 kilograms (40 pounds).
However, when lifting of heavier items over 18 kilograms (40 pounds), they will use jacks, hoists, and/or helpers. Working Conditions The employee will be conducting work either inside and/or outside.
May work on parts and systems which are dirty and greasy, and which may be dangerous to operate or repair because of defects.
While inside, they will be frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and loud noise.
While working outside, they may be exposed to and need to work in bad weather, in rain or snow, or in wet or icy areas.
For their daily duties, inside or outside, the employee will be frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, heat, fumes, and hard damp floors or surfaces; the possibility of receiving cuts, burns, bruises, strains, and electrical shock while repairing, positioning, adjusting, and moving equipment.
In addition, the possibility of receiving burns and skin irritations from acids, fluids, and lubricants.
With this, to reduce the dangers and irritations from the above conditions, the mechanics follow numerous safety procedures and wear equipment such as protective eyeglasses, ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, respirators, gloves, and clothing.
Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use and may be worn or used for long periods.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work.
You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social).
Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Major Duties:
Leads a team of trades and/or labor workers. Performs work. Performs nonsupervisory trades and/or labor work that is usually of the same kind and level as members of the work crew led.
Attends and participates in various meetings in order to provide input and implement maintenance plans. Maintains and/or controls tools and equipment.
