Summary

This job is for a lead mechanic who maintains and repairs powered support systems like aircraft ground equipment, while guiding and training other workers on these tasks.

It combines hands-on repair work with leadership responsibilities in a military setting.

A good fit would be someone with strong mechanical experience in equipment maintenance, who enjoys teaching others and can handle challenging work environments.

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a work leader, to provide training, certification and knowledge of Powered Support System Mechanics, working directly with journeymen and non-journeymen performing all tasks assigned to Powered Support System Mechanics.

Also requires the performance of the full tasks of a journeyman Powered Support System Mechanic.

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5300 Industrial Equipment Maintenance Family.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of equipment, assembly, installation, repair, etc.

Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc.

(includes blueprint reading) Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment Knowledge of materials Troubleshooting PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work.

You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. WORKING CONDITIONS: May work inside or outside.

Inside work involves frequent exposure to drafts, changing temperature, and loud noise. Outside work may involve exposure to bad weather, rain or snow, or wet or icy conditions.

Both inside and outside, frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, heat, fumes, and hard damp floors or surfaces.

May work on parts and systems which are dirty and greasy and which may be dangerous to operate or repair because of defects.

Incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, burns, bruises, strains, and electrical shock while repairing, positioning, adjusting, and moving equipment and is exposed to the possibility of receiving burns and skin irritations from acids, fluids, and lubricants.

To reduce the dangers and irritations from the above conditions, the incumbent must follow numerous safety procedures and wear equipment such as protective eyeglasses, ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, respirators, gloves, and clothing.

Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use, and may be worn or used for long periods. Major Duties:

Provides guidance and passes on to other instructions received from supervisor and gets work started.

Performs preventive maintenance on aircraft ground equipment (AGE)/ground support equipment (GSE), including trailers.

Installs, inspects, and performs modifications and repairs to electrical power support systems.

Performs major repair, replacement, overhaul, and/or modifications of aircraft ground equipment (AGE)/ground support equipment (GSE) such as power sources; support system components like diesel, multi-fuel, or gas turbine engines; electrical accessories of engines, and aircraft arrestor barrier units.

Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean environment.
