Full Job Description

This position is located at the Tomah VA Medical Center, Tomah, WI. (676) - a Level 3 Complexity VHA Facility and is organizationally aligned under the Police & Security Service Line.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: experience that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property.

Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills.

Experience as a security guard or corrections officer is generally NOT qualifying. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience.

To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in Police Science or a comparable degree program related to the work of the position.

Major Duties:

Major duties include but not limited to: Enforcement of Federal law and VA regulations, preservation of peace, prevention, detection, and investigation of crimes occurring on Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) controlled property.

Directs traffic to ensure smooth flow, especially during peak times or in the event of accidents.

Conducts routine foot and vehicle patrols of assigned areas to maintain order and security, deter crime, and check for unsafe conditions.

Responsible for the arrest of violators, traffic control, and providing assistance in emergency situations, including the protection of personnel, civil rights, and VA-owned or controlled property.

Correctly identifies and classifies simple criminal or civil offenses and recognizes both normal and deviant behavior.

Assists in the coordination with other law enforcement agencies under direct supervision to gather information or follow up on cases.

Ensuring compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and policies during all activities is a critical part of the duties.

Follows instructions from supervisors and seeks guidance when needed, particularly when testifying in court about cases handled.

Provides assistance to the public by offering directions, helping with car trouble, and responding to urgent situations, administering basic first aid when necessary. Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 6:00am to 6:00 pm or 6:00pm to 6:00am Virtual: This is not a virtual position.
