Requirements

As an Equipment Operator with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, you will play an essential role in keeping roadways safe and efficient throughout the year, especially during the demanding winter season.

Your work will support snow removal, construction activities, and daily maintenance operations that directly impact the safety of the traveling public.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate Heavy Equipment: Safely operate trucks, plows, and construction equipment to support snow removal and roadway maintenance.
  • Perform Manual and Construction Tasks: Assist with various maintenance and construction projects that improve roadway safety and infrastructure.
  • Conduct Equipment Care: Perform minor repairs, routine servicing, and daily inspections to ensure equipment and vehicles remain in proper working condition.
  • Maintain Accurate Records: Complete daily logs and reports that document equipment usage, maintenance activities, and operational needs.
  • Support Team Operations: Work collaboratively with your crew to complete physically demanding tasks that require coordination and commitment.
  • Promote Safety: Follow all safety procedures, use required protective gear, remain aware of hazards, and report any injuries or incidents immediately.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Travel, overtime, and shift work required. Work hours subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Graduation from a Commercial Driver’s License Training School; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:
  • Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed.
  • Must possess a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
  • This position requires employees to demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
  • All permanent employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period.
  • Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
  • All employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.

Additional Requirement:
  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
