  • Ability to perform physically active tasks, including operating heavy machinery and minor repairs
  • Experience or training in snow removal, highway maintenance, and construction support
  • Full-time availability with flexible hours based on seasonal needs (no telework)

Requirements

As an Equipment Operator with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, you play a crucial role in keeping our roadways safe and efficient—especially during the demanding winter months when snow removal is essential.

Your work goes far beyond plowing; you also support a variety of construction and maintenance projects where your skills directly contribute to public safety and the reliability of our infrastructure.

Each day brings hands-on, physically active tasks that rely on teamwork, precision, and commitment.In this role, you will operate heavy machinery, perform minor repairs, and carry out routine maintenance on your assigned equipment and vehicles.

You will also maintain detailed daily logs and reports that track equipment usage and maintenance history—records that are vital for operational planning and accountability.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. Work hours subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Graduation from a Commercial Driver's License Training School; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:
  • Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed.
  • Must possess a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
  • Employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks (HT) and loaders (LD) and two additional pieces of construction equipment within the probationary period.
  • Employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.

Additional Requirement:
  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
