The Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR), Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services (BBVS), Wilkes-Barre District Office is looking for a dedicated Orientation and Mobility Specialist.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to provide Orientation and Mobility instruction to blind and visually impaired customers in addition to evaluating and teaching independent travel within the customers’ homes, workplaces, and communities.

An Orientation Mobility Specialist is responsible for planning and teaching adaptive travel techniques to children and adults in an individual or group setting.
Your focus is to promote optimal personal and social adjustment to blindness, leading to self-sufficiency and independent living.
Work includes assessing customers referred for Orientation and Mobility services by collecting and reviewing reports and information, interviewing customers and observing current level of functioning.
This position develops an individualized service plan that contains a schedule of instruction based on objectives and recommendations and in coordination with the Vocational Rehabilitation, Independent Living, and Social Services plan.
You can expect to monitor customer progress by evaluating achievement and reinforcing customer skill development by providing supportive counseling to the customer and the family.
You will have the opportunity to provide information, consultation, and in-service training to staff of provider agencies, nursing homes, hospitals and community facilities in order to assist them in meeting the needs of those who are blind and visually impaired.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, upon successful completion of the training period.
In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania.
If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Wilkes-Barre. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.
