Full Job Description

You will serve as a NUCLEAR MECHANICAL SYSTEMS INSPECTOR (SHIPS) in the Nuclear Inspection Division (Code 139) of PSNS and IMF.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Major Duties:

  • You will perform mechanical, piping, and structural inspections, material condition inspections, in-process, product, pre-test, test inspections, certification and acceptance of work reviews on nuclear reactor plant, refueling, and overhaul work
  • You will perform receipt inspection, pre-use inspection and marking verification of naval nuclear material ensuring proper material control and traceability is maintained.
  • You will perform material verification which may be obtained by physical test, physical comparison, certification documentation, or all of the above; material marking; and post installation generic identification and traceability verification
  • You will ensure and document reactor grade cleanliness of shipboard systems by performing surveillance inspections as they deem fit and performing a final inspection prior to final system closure
  • You will ensure that during the performance of the relevant duties, due consideration is given to the safety of ships, equipment, and personnel.
  • You will maintain records of inspections performed, results of these inspections and corrective action taken in accordance with local directives.
