Job Description

Summary

This temporary job helps fight wildfires, manage controlled burns, repair roads, prepare land for new trees, and maintain heavy equipment in Michigan's forests during the busy spring fire season.

It's ideal for people with hands-on experience in firefighting or natural resources who are physically fit and eager to support permanent forest staff.

No advanced degree is needed, but practical skills in fire suppression and outdoor work are key.

Key Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education
  • Experience in wildfire suppression, fire fighting, or prescribed burns (for level 7: as part of a fire department, natural resources agency, or wildland crew)
  • Completion of Fire Fighter I certification from Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council, equivalent military training, or NWCG Fire Fighter 2 qualification (for level 7)
  • One year of experience equivalent to Forest Fire Officer 7 plus in-service training (for level 8)
  • Two years of experience, including one year equivalent to level 8 plus in-service training (for level E9)
  • Ability to pass a physical exam and annual fitness test, including the MDNR fitness requirements
  • Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with A or B designation and N endorsement (for some positions, without air brake restriction)

Under the direction of the Forest Fire Officer Supervisor, this temporary employee performs a variety of forestry activities including wildfire suppression, prescribed burning, road repairs, forest regeneration site preparation, and heavy equipment maintenance and operation, as qualified. Employees are developing a body of knowledge related to forest protection and management methods, procedures, policies, laws and regulations, and the maintenance and operation of specialized equipment utilized in forest protection, resource damage restoration, infrastructure repair, and reforestation.

This is a temporary, non-career position that assists permanent, career staff during the spring fire season.

Requirements

Education
Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school.

Experience

Forest Fire Officer 7
Work experience fighting fires, performing fire suppression, and/or performing prescribed burns as a member of a state, county, township, municipal, federal or military fire department, natural resources agency, or private wildland firefighter crew with completion of the Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council's Fire Fighter I, equivalent military training course, or National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Fire Fighter 2 qualification.

Forest Fire Officer 8
One year of experience equivalent to a Forest Fire Officer 7 and division in-service training.

Forest Fire Officer E9
Two years as a Forest Fire Officer, including one year equivalent to a Forest Fire Officer 8 and division in-service training.


Qualifications

Forest Fire Officer 7
Two years of college with 15 semester (23 term) credits in natural resources technology, fire technology, forest technology, or wildlife technology may be substituted for the experience requirement.
