Job Description

Summary

This job involves working as an administrative assistant in a military hospital, where you'll schedule patient appointments, handle phone calls and messages, and ensure medical records are accurate and up-to-date.

You'll also check patient eligibility for care and quickly direct emergencies to the right medical staff.

It's a good fit for someone with customer service experience in a healthcare setting or office environment, who is organized and comfortable using computers for data entry.

About the Position: This position is located at Naval Medical Center San Diego, CA. A recruitment or relocation incentive may be authorized.

Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service. Advanced leave accrual may be authorized.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Basic Requirement for Medical Support Assistant (OA): Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service which includes providing customer service, addressing phone calls and assisting visitors entering the clinic; scheduling various types of appointment and using automated systems to input and retrieve data.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60.

Add the two percentages. Major Duties:

  • Arrange and schedule medical appointments and determines patient eligibility for services.
  • Review documentation to obtain additional information and determines eligibility for treatment.
  • Immediately refer information on patients needing emergency care to appropriate technician, nurse and/or physician, and works emergencies into the health provider’s schedule as necessary.
  • Review all medical records to ensure accuracy of information.
  • Receive and answer or relays incoming and outgoing telephone, intercom, electronic, and voicemail messages
  • Receive telephone messages pertaining to detailed laboratory reports, x-rays, and test results, refers urgent ones to appropriate professional staff for immediate assistance.
  • Arrange meetings as directed. Initiates administrative related forms for patients’ signatures.
