Riverside University Health System is currently recruiting for a Medical Unit Clerk to join the Mental Health Emergency Treatment team within the Behavioral Health facility in Riverside, California.

Under general supervision, the Medical Unit Clerk performs a variety of clerical and administrative duties in support of physicians, nurses, and other clinical staff assigned to the medical treatment area.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to: answering and directing phone calls; assembling and disassembling patient charts; completing and distributing assignment logs; processing incoming faxed referrals; obtaining, recording, and maintaining hospital census information; and performing filing duties.

The Medical Unit Clerk also requests supplies and maintains appropriate stock levels in the work area, provides end-of-shift reports to incoming Medical Unit Clerks, and ensures communication boards are current and accurate.

Additional duties include carrying out laboratory orders, referrals, and medical consults; scheduling medical appointments; arranging transportation for in-house patients; and assisting patients with placing phone calls.

Behavioral Health position info:

Schedule: 5/40, 3pm – 11:30pm, 8-hour shifts, rotating weekends
Location: 9990 County Farm Road, Riverside CA 92503

Differential: Evening shift differential of $1.30 per hour for your time worked between 6pm - 11pm, Night shift differential of $1.90 per hour for your time worked between 11pm - 6am.
Requirements:

  • Previous clerical experience in a healthcare setting. Behavioral health experience preferred.

  • Must be comfortable working overnight in behavioral health emergency and inpatient healthcare facilities.

  • Candidate should have knowledge in medical terminology, preferably completed a medical assistant course.

  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English proficiently.

  • BLS certification is required issues by the American Heart Association

Requirements

•Transcribes physician's orders from patient chart to the proper forms in preparation for verification by professional staff; answers telephone; takes and delivers telephone messages.

•Provides routine information as requested to staff, patients, visitors, and the public; greets patients and visitors; places calls to doctors, other medical units, and support units as directed.

•Tracks admissions, discharges, transfer, and room changes for census purposes; completes proper forms and records for patient admissions, transfers, discharges, examinations, and testing; may assemble, disassemble, update, and thin patient charts.

•Maintains unit files; runs errands and transports supplies, specimens, and other materials as needed; contacts or receives calls from hospital departments, hospitals, doctor's offices, or medical agencies to coordinate or schedule services for patients.

•Responds to established emergency procedures; assists in ordering stock supplies; may distribute mail, packages, and flowers to patients as necessary.

•May make clinic appointments for patients; may prepare birth certificates and identification bands as necessary; may perform incidental typing duties.

Qualifications

Experience: One year of experience in clerical work, preferably in an acute care setting. Either or the following may be substituted for the required experience:

Completion of 18 semester or 24 quarter units from a recognized college in secretarial sciences, office practice, business education, medical assisting, or a closely related field;
OR
Completion of 360 hours of training from a recognized occupational training program in secretarial sciences, business education, medical assisting, or a closely related field.

Knowledge of: Modern office practices and procedures, including filing and operating standard office equipment.

Ability to: Understand and follow oral and written directions; perform general clerical work and learn quickly the specific operations of a medical treatment unit; establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and fellow employees; work effectively under stress and in emergency situations.

Other Requirements

Skill to: Type 45 net words per minute.
