About the Position: Serves as a Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) performing full range of duties to decontaminate, clean, prepare, sterilize, and distribute medical/dental supplies and equipment used in all areas of the Dental Clinic in the Medical Treatment Facility in Wiesbaden, Germany.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes sterilizing medical and/or dental supplies and equipment for use in a medical or dental clinic per regulatory standards; inspecting medical and/or dental supplies for defects; and maintaining medical and/or dental instrument inventory to ensure daily operations.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-5).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.

For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Major Duties:

  • Accounts for and processes surgical instruments, to include complex loaner sets for scheduled cases, emergent cases, and clinic/ward instrumentation.
  • Conducts equipment testing of surgical instruments to ensure operational efficiency and surgical precision.
  • Determines appropriate sterilization methods and cycles for various item types.
  • Initiates sterile item recall protocol when deficiencies are found in previously sterilized loads.
  • Ensures appropriate climate control measures are maintained and documented per the facility’s Standard Operating Procedure.
  • Scans instruments upon arrival in decontamination for use in, or issuance to serviced hospital departments.
  • Performs daily quality assurance testing on all equipment used in the cleaning and sterilization of surgical instruments.
