The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking a Maintenance Specialist 5 to provide supervision, direction and guidance to bridge maintenance crews in safe and effective operations, maintenance and repairs to the state-owned movable spans at Montlake and Duwamish River bridges in King County.

This work is completed in accordance with CFR’s Title 33, Part 117, pertaining to drawbridges over navigable waters. These bridges are on navigable waterways and are regulated by the US Coast Guard.

What to Expect

Work schedule is typically 40 hours per week for 4, 10-hour shifts and will require nights, days, weekends, and holidays.

Duties are often physical in nature and often performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions, including heavy cross winds and other hazards, during both daytime and nighttime.

May perform duties at elevated heights, above 100 feet catwalks, UBIT or suspended staging, over land or water.


Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Maintenance Specialist 5 will:

  • Ensure the safe and reliable operation of the three movable span bridges.
  • Program, schedule, and supervise movable span crew in safely conducting inspections, preventative maintenance and performing repairs.
  • Direct crews and prioritize work using Operation, Inspection and Maintenance Manuals; direct movable span bridge crews in performing routine, preventative and repair work.
  • Support the Bridge Preservation Office (BPO) with mechanical and electrical inspections.
  • Counsel, provide guidance, and complete timely performance evaluations (PMP’s) of employees.
  • Monitor employee performance and provide continuous feedback.
  • Be responsible for referencing and entering data in various reporting and information systems such as Maintenance Productivity Enhancement Tool (MPET), Highway Activity Tracking System (HATS) and Bridge Engineering information system (BIEST).


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:

  • Journey-Level Skilled Trades Expertise: Demonstrated journey-level experience in a related skilled trade such as construction, steel fabrication, carpentry, electrical, concrete, mechanical, or millwright work, with the ability to independently perform complex tasks and apply trade standards, safety practices, and technical knowledge.
  • Mechanical: Significant knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Mathematics: Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
  • Building and Construction: Knowledge and understanding of structural systems such as concrete, steel, and wood which includes the application of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of bridges, or other structures such as highways and buildings.
  • Engineering and Technology: Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and ability to inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
  • Communicating with Supervisors, Peers, Subordinates or People Outside the Organization: Providing information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates.

    Communicating with people outside the organization, representing the organization to customers, the public, government, and other external sources.

    This information can be exchanged in person, in writing, or by telephone or e-mail.

  • Operating Vehicles, Mechanized Devices, or Equipment: Running, maneuvering, navigating, or driving vehicles or mechanized equipment, such as forklifts, passenger vehicles or watercraft.
  • Active Listening: Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Performing Administrative Activities: Performing day-to-day administrative tasks such as maintaining information files and processing paperwork.
  • Processing Information: Compiling, coding, categorizing, calculating, tabulating, auditing, or verifying information or data.
  • Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
  • Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.


In addition to the above, the following are also required:

  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate state-owned vehicles.
  • Class A CDL, N tank endorsement, without restrictions E for no manual transmission and L for air brake restriction, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment.
  • Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to perform duties low to the ground or at ground level, above 100 feet catwalks, UBIT or suspended staging, over land or water, as well as perform duties and/or assist others in a confined environment.
  • Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Organizing, Planning, and Prioritizing Work: Experience developing specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish your work.
  • Supervisory Experience: Proven experience leading and/or supervising crews, providing clear direction, and making sound decisions in stressful conditions.

  • Occasional travel may be required for work-related training or meetings. This position also involves frequent travel to various job sites within the Northwest Region (NWR), utilizing a state-assigned vehicle for transportation.
  • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
