The Opportunity

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is currently seeking a skilled Highway Maintenance Worker 3 to join our team in Auburn, WA.

In this role, you will play a vital part in keeping Washington’s transportation system safe and reliable for the traveling public.

Working under the direction of a Highway Maintenance Worker (HMW) 4 and/or 5, this position leads crews responsible for the maintenance and repair of highways and highway structures within an assigned sub-section of roadway and may also support area-wide maintenance operations.

This work directly supports the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce throughout the region.

As a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, you will perform a variety of highly skilled highway maintenance tasks, operate a wide range of specialized highway equipment and tools, and provide on-the-ground leadership to maintenance crews.


What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 3 will:

  • Lead Highway Maintenance Crews in the daily performance of all maintenance and operations tasks throughout State Highways.
  • prioritize, plan, schedule, and budget maintenance activities to accomplish the work.
  • Lead, schedule, and direct highway maintenance activities throughout State Highways.
  • Coordinate equipment and personnel with fellow Highway Maintenance Worker 3s.
  • Maintain and submit daily records and reports of maintenance activities, such as time, equipment, fuel, and oil reports for the personnel and equipment under its jurisdiction.
  • Enter all maintenance activities into computerized systems (e.g., Highway Activity Tracking System (HATS), Work Zone Data base (WZDB), Traffic Sign Management System (TSMS, etc.); review computerized records to ensure accuracy.
  • Train personnel in equipment usage, safety, highway maintenance, and public relations.
  • Arrange for the purchase of repair or replacement parts; arranges rental or lease of privately owned equipment.
  • Prepare project estimates for all LEMO (Labor, Equipment, Materials, Other) costs.
  • Assist in the investigation of employee personal injury and equipment damage. Assist in completion of reporting of accidents in computerized system (SIIRS)
  • Attend and may lead monthly organization safety meetings to ensure safe work practices and compliance with new regulations including confined space, fall restraint, and traffic control.
  • Perform day-to-day highway maintenance operations.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

Highway Maintenance Expertise: Demonstrates advanced-level proficiency in highway maintenance practices, including pavement repair, drainage systems, erosion control, vegetation management, sign and guardrail installation, and debris removal.

Ability to assess maintenance needs and perform repairs to highway structures, roadside features, and landscapes.

  • Commercial Vehicle Operation: Competently operate vehicles and equipment requiring an unrestricted Class A CDL with N endorsement, ensuring safe and compliant transportation of materials and machinery.
  • Operational Decision-Making: Applies sound judgment in dynamic field conditions, making timely decisions that support safety, operational continuity, and agency standards.
  • Licensing & Certification: Valid Washington State CDL Class A driver’s license with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction, with valid medical card.

    The ability to obtain a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card within six (6) months of hire. The ability to obtain within 6 months of hire and maintain valid First Aid/CPR Certification.

    Possession of an unrestricted valid driver’s license to legally operate vehicles in Washington State.

  • Traffic Control & Work Zone Safety: Knowledge of traffic control practices following the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Ability to plan and implement safe work zones, including flagging, signage, and the use of cones/barrels.
  • Communication Proficiency: Communicates clearly and professionally with diverse audiences through written, verbal, and interpersonal channels, ensuring accurate information exchange in routine and high-pressure situations.
  • Customer Service Excellence: Provides responsive, respectful, and solution-oriented service to internal and external customers, representing the agency with professionalism.
  • Independent Work & Prioritization: Manages workload effectively with minimal supervision, prioritizing multiple assignments and adapting to changing operational needs.
  • Digital & Software Skills: Utilizes Windows-based systems and software including Excel, Word, SharePoint, Outlook, and cloud-based tools to complete documentation, reporting, communication, and operational tasks efficiently.

  • It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

    Traffic Control & Work Zone Safety: Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to implement traffic control practices in accordance with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards.

    Experience planning and establishing work zones, properly placing traffic control devices (signs, cones, barrels), and performing flagging operations to ensure the safety of crews and the traveling public.

  • Computer & Systems Proficiency: Demonstrated proficiency using computer applications and web-based systems to support daily work activities, including Microsoft Office programs, internal agency systems, and other digital tools used for communication, documentation, and operational tracking.
  • Communication Skills: Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively with diverse audiences in both verbal and written formats.

    Experience providing instructions, sharing operational information, and coordinating with team members, supervisors, and external partners to support safe and efficient work activities.

  • Commercial Vehicle Operation: Demonstrated experience safely operating vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,000 pounds, including knowledge of safe operating practices, vehicle inspections, and adherence to applicable transportation and safety regulations.
  • Crew Leadership & Decision-Making: Demonstrated ability to lead or direct field crews by providing clear instructions, maintaining situational awareness in dynamic environments, and making timely, sound decisions during routine operations and high-pressure situations.
  • Highway Maintenance Equipment Knowledge: Working knowledge of TEF-owned equipment, including demonstrated ability to select and utilize the appropriate equipment for specific highway maintenance tasks while following established safety and operational procedures.
  • Plans Reading & Interpretation: Ability to read, interpret, and apply construction plans, specifications, and diagrams to support field operations. Possession of a Plans Reading Certification is preferred.
