This recruitment is open on an internal basis for permanent state employees within the Washington Military Department.

The Washington Military Department (WMD) is seeking a detailed-oriented Maintenance Custodian to join our team. The ideal candidate takes pride in maintaining clean, safe, and well-functioning facilities while contributing to a positive environment for staff, visitors, and customers. This role plays a vital part in ensuring our building operations run smoothly through routine cleaning, basic maintenance tasks, and proactive problem-solving.

The Maintenance Custodian reports to the Building and Grounds Supervisor of the State Maintenance and Support Services Branch within the Construction and Facilities Management Office and will be responsible for general cleaning duties, minor repairs, equipment upkeep, and supporting overall facility needs. Strong attention to detail, time management skills, and the ability to work independently are essential for success in this position.

Requirements


Responsibilities include:

Custodial services:
  • Cleaning and disinfecting facilities, ordering supplies, and servicing custodial equipment.
Light Building Maintenance:
  • Electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and drain and waste systems.
  • Assist maintenance personnel as assigned.
Trash, Recycling, and Litter Control:
  • Perform daily trash, recycling and litter control efforts.

Qualifications


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

One year of experience in janitorial services, grounds maintenance, building maintenance, and/or construction.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS


Experience:

  • Custodial-related efforts and equipment repairs.

  • Minor maintenance repair.

Knowledge of:

  • Cleaning methods, safety practices, chemicals, equipment and supplies used in general custodial work.
  • Routine maintenance functions (e.g. plumbing, electrical, and mechanical).
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the building trades.
Skills, Abilities, and Competencies to:
  • Perform light building maintenance.
  • Operate custodial appliances.
  • Operate and drive light vehicles and trucks to transport supplies and equipment, haul refuse/garbage.
  • Use Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, etc.) to develop documents in support of program requirements.
  • The ability to take action to learn and grow.
  • The ability to take action to meet the needs of others.

Additional Information


Compensation: Wage/salary depends on qualifications or rules of promotion.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Background Investigation:
Must successfully complete the appropriate background checks required for employment and to obtain/maintain a DoD Common Access Card (CAC) in order to obtain/maintain a DoD Secret-level security clearance. Must be willing to sign releases of information and shall not have access to any investigative materials and files. The processing of background checks can take up to six months post-employment. Failure to successfully pass a background check may be cause for termination.

Driver's License:

  1. Valid to drive in the State of Washington.
  2. Must meet requirements of the REAL ID Act. This is required for base access and will be required upon hire.

Military Facility: Willingness to work on a Military Controlled Access Installation.
Camp Murray utilizes the Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) for entry to the installation. Must meet access requirements / background check which can be found in the Camp Murray Access Requirements Policy (Unified Policy No. 18-01). This includes possession of an Enhanced Driver’s License, or other REAL ID Compliant Identification.

Work Hours: A choice between Tuesday through Friday (4/10 schedule): Monday through Thursday (4/10 schedule): or Monday through Friday (5/8 schedule). Actual hours will start no earlier than 6:00 am and end no later than 6:00 pm and will include core business hours of 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Telework: This position is not eligible for telework.

Emergency Assignment: Upon activation of the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) or Joint Field Office (JFO), incumbent may be required to work in an alternate location with rotating shifts, including weekends and evenings, in a highly stressful and fast-paced environment.

Travel: Occasional statewide travel may be required up to 5% to include overnight stays.
