The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking multiple Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2s to join Eastern Region’s (ER) Area 1 Maintenance crew.

Under the direction of a Bridge Maintenance Lead, this journey-level position is a member of the regional maintenance organization.

Operating a wide variety of highway equipment and tools, this position is responsible for maintaining and repairing highways and highway structures to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce.

This position performs a variety of skilled maintenance tasks and may occasionally lead a crew in the absence of a Highway Bridge Maintenance Lead.


What to Expect

The typical schedule for this role is Monday – Thursday, 40 hours per week, for 4, 10-hour days.

Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled call-out emergencies, as well as working alternate and emergency shifts, and responding to emergencies in all weather conditions, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.


Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2 will:

  • Maintain, repair and reconstruct bridges and structures to include deck repair, expansion joints, repair/replacement of caps, stringers, pilings, abutments, walkways, curbs, sidewalks, railings, columns, piers, and bulkheads.
  • Asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair.
  • Guardrail, fence, and impact attenuator installation and repair; danger tree removal.
  • Assist in snow and ice operations.
  • Design and set up traffic control for all operations, including full road or bridge closures, in accordance with departmental and MUTCD standards; perform traffic control.
  • Provide equipment instruction and training to other personnel.
  • Assist in the safe cleanup and removal of unlawful dwellings.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:

  • Roadway and Bridge Maintenance Operations: Demonstrated ability to perform roadway and/or bridge maintenance activities, including repair, construction, or preservation work, using appropriate tools, equipment, materials, and safety practices.
  • Heavy Equipment and Tool Operation: Demonstrated ability to safely operate highway maintenance equipment, vehicles, and hand/power tools, or equivalent experience operating heavy equipment in related fields such as construction, logging, farming, mining, or excavation.
  • Safety and Traffic Control: Demonstrated knowledge of safe work practices in or near live traffic, including the ability to set up and maintain traffic control in accordance with MUTCD and departmental standards.
  • Documentation and Communication: Demonstrated ability to accurately track, document, and report work activities, inventory, and equipment usage using written or electronic systems.

In addition to the above, the following are also required:

  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate state-owned vehicles.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) with air brake endorsement (no automatic transmission restriction) and a valid DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate within twelve (12) months of appointment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card within 6 months of appointment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid certification within 6 months of appointment.
  • Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to report in service to the assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours call.
  • Ability to work at elevated heights above 25 feet over land or water, as well as negotiate rough or steep terrain.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Advanced Maintenance Experience: Demonstrated experience performing roadway and bridge maintenance or construction activities, including work with concrete, asphalt, structural components, or drainage systems.
  • Equipment and Technical Proficiency: Demonstrated proficiency operating specialized highway maintenance equipment and vehicles, including plow trucks, loaders, excavators, bucket trucks, or similar equipment.
  • Certifications and Credentials: Current Class A CDL with air brake endorsement and valid DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate; Current Traffic Control/Flagging certification; Current First Aid certification.


Important Notes

  • This recruitment will be used to fill four (4) permanent positions within the Eastern Region. This recruitment may also be used to fill additional vacated positions.
  • This position is not eligible for remote work.
  • Employees will be required to travel for up to 4 days, 3 nights or more at a time throughout the summer to remote work sites and occasional off-site meetings or attend training.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
