About the Division: Seattle Parks and Facilities Maintenance Division performs maintenance at over 25 miles of boulevards, 465 parks, including 26 community centers, 8 indoor swimming pools, 2 outdoor (summer) swimming pools, 4 environmental education centers, 2 small-craft centers, 4 golf courses, and an outdoor stadium.

We place strong emphasis on providing excellent customer service to the public, clients, and staff to ensure public safety and enjoyment while they are at SPR facilities and parks.


Position Description: Seattle Parks & Recreation Facilities Maintenance Division is seeking a Maintenance Laborer for our Night Shift.

This role involves providing support to skilled trade workers within the parks department, assisting with tasks in parks, community centers, pools, and associated buildings, under ongoing supervision.


Employees in these positions perform a variety of tasks associated with the ongoing preventive maintenance and routine upkeep of our Parks properties.

Work is primarily performed on the 3rd shift between the hours of 8:30 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., on a four-day, ten-hour schedule.

The work requires specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities to carry out a range of semi-skilled, non-journey-level trades and maintenance tasks.

Duties are completed according to specific supervisory instructions or established procedures, and employees frequently perform tasks independently.


Requirements

  • Assists a variety of skilled trade personnel in coordinating and performing skilled work; will also assist in the maintenance, repair and construction of buildings and other facilities.
  • Assists and participates in maintenance and repair of parks property.
  • Provides manual assistance to other workers and uses various types of hand and small power tools such as hammers, saws, axes, drills, jackhammers, rotary drills, weed eaters, backpack blowers, shovels, and scythes.
  • Assists in set-ups, room arrangements, and office relocations such as in the set up and removal of chairs, risers, portable turnstiles, and flooring.

    Operates handheld scrubbers and polishers; Picks up trash, sweeps floors, dust, washes windows, disinfects, vacuums, and performs other tasks to keep areas clean.

  • Prepare work areas for skilled trades by clearing spaces, staging materials, and ensuring safe access.
  • May plan or assist in planning for materials and equipment required for work assignments or areas.
  • Assist in the setup, prep and/or cleanup for paint applications and/or paint removal.
  • Maintain strong situational awareness during night-shift hours, identifying safety risks such as spills, damaged surfaces, or security concerns.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and courtesy when interacting with community members, even during limited night-shift contact.
  • Communicate progress, issues, or incomplete tasks to supervisor to ensure continuity.
  • Provide assistance to skilled trades workers by transporting materials, setting up equipment, and performing labor tasks that support repair or construction activities.
  • Drives pickup trucks and other motorized vehicles or equipment in connection with work activities.
  • Maintains routine records and reports.
  • Perform assigned duties with minimal supervision.
  • Take immediate action to mitigate hazards when appropriate and report them according to established procedures.
  • Assists in routine gutter system maintenance and repair of buildings.
  • Assist in Drainage and/or Plumbing maintenance and repair work.
  • Assist in the participation of opening, backfilling, and shoring of trenches and other excavations.
  • Perform routine custodial duties according to established procedures.
  • Willingness to be flexible to change assignments throughout shift as directed.
  • Performs other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned and lower-level duties of Utility Laborer and Laborer.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
One year of experience performing general laboring/manual work involving the construction, installation, repair, and maintenance of public facilities (Combinations of education, training and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability).


License, Certification, and Other Requirements:

  • Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

Work Environment/Physical Demands/Other:

  • May be required to work weekends and/or holidays.
  • Required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
  • Required to work outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Frequently required to lift objects up to 50 pounds. May occasionally be required to lift objects weighing more than 50 pounds.
  • Work at heights on ladders or scaffolding.
  • Work at heights using scissor lift or boom lift.
  • May work near heavy equipment.
  • Required to work near energized equipment.
  • Occasionally requires handling or working with toxic/hazardous substances.
  • May work in confined spaces.
  • Dependent on business needs, candidates may be required to obtain a respirator clearance fit test.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and schedule maintenance tasks, aligning them with departmental needs.
  • Experience performing routine facility upkeep, grounds maintenance, or custodial work in parks, public facilities, or similar environments.
  • Experience working independently during off-hours or low-supervision shifts.
  • One year’s experience working with skilled trade workers.
  • Be highly motivated and able to work as a team member in a demanding work environment, meeting tight deadlines.
  • Skilled in reviewing upcoming maintenance tasks to identify and prioritize required materials, ensuring all necessary supplies are secured in advance for efficient night shift operations.
  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to use standard office software and work order/asset management systems for tasks such as record-keeping, reporting, and communication.
  • Can work in a fast-paced environment.
  • One year’s experience working with construction tools and building materials.
  • Competence in maintaining clear and comprehensive written records.
  • Effective communication skills to coordinate maintenance activities, convey operational needs, concerns, and procedures.
  • Exhibit a high level of proficiency in verbal communication to convey information effectively and professionally.
  • Experience in interacting with the public coupled with a high level of proficiency in customer service.

Additional Information

Compensation:

This position is part of a 1-Step Compensation program; The full salary range for this position is $37.95 (Step 1) – $37.95 (Step 1) hourly.

This position is represented by LiUNA Local 242 – Laborers.
