Note: Actual salary includes locality pay (15-40%+ depending on location).
This job involves managing the receipt, sorting, and delivery of all mail for a large Veterans Affairs facility in Columbia, South Carolina, including handling urgent, hazardous, or sensitive items and preparing outgoing mail.
It also includes analyzing mail operations, compiling reports, educating staff on procedures, and ensuring security.
A good fit would be someone with experience in logistics or mail handling who is organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable driving and working in a fast-paced government environment.
This position is located in the Distribution (Mail & Reproduction Section), Supply Chain Management Service (SCMS).
The principal duties and responsibilities of the position have six main components: Internal /external distribution; mail analysis to include compiling monthly reports and (non-recurring reports when required by department heads); processing outgoing mail; processing controlled mail; facility education; and ADP /mail security.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 04/23/2026.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service.
An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials.
If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement.
In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

Major Duties:
Duties of the position include, but are not limited to: - Receives all facility mail from external sources, e.g., US Postal Service (USPS), United Parcel Service (UPS), Federal Express (FedEx), etc.
Sorts mail for internal distribution by mail routing symbol and/or mail delivery point (MDP). Pick up and deliver mail to approximately 105 MDPs serviced by this facility.
- Drive a motorized mail truck to delivery/pickup points which are in different buildings within the complex and different locations within the city.
- Assesses urgency and sensitivity of incoming Express Mail, Priority Mail, overnight deliveries, hazardous, and perishable materials for proper handling and delivery.
Assesses all incoming mail for potentially harmful or dangerous situations (e.g., incendiary or explosive materials). - Processes outgoing mail.
Assesses all outgoing mail for proper and complete addressing, proper labeling, and packaging.
Prepares outgoing mail for processing by sorting into accounting groups, sub-grouping by class of service, and further sorting by machine. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30 am-4:00 pm.
