This Laundry Machine Operator position supports textile product line of Environmental Management Service in a Veteran Affairs Health Care System (VA HCS) medical facility with supported Community-based Outpatient Clinics.

The position performs laundry and laundry machine operations and transporting of textiles to various facility locations. This position also supports the sanitation, and warehouse product lines.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/23/2026.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.

Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work requires long periods of standing on hard surfaces and heavy physical effort in removing wet laundry by hand from washers and lifting bundles of dirty laundry from trucks, frequently weighing 35 to 50 pounds or more.

Physical effort is required in pushing carts of laundry, sorting, and weighing. Major Duties:

The Laundry Machine Operator who maintain VA facilities for Veterans and their families are essential to the patient care experience at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

A VA healthcare career as a Laundry Machine Operator means working alongside other Veterans, contributing to the housekeeping staff and services. Operates controls on 100 lb.

capacity washer/extractor selecting from pre programmed wash formulas. Loads machine to obtain maximum utilization and prevent an out-of-balance condition during extraction.

Selects the appropriate pre-programmed washer and dryer cycle for all textiles. Selects the correct wash cycle based on type of fabric type, color, etc.

Separates out any extremely soiled items (blood, grass, etc.) and pre-treats prior to washing. Follows protective procedures when handling laundry chemicals. Operates all controls on the dryer/tumbler.

Loads machine to obtain maximum utilization and efficiency and to prevent overprocessing of garments.

Responsible for the collection of Veterans' personal clothing, employee uniforms, and linens, and for return of these items to the correct Unit/Clinic areas.

Processes specialty items such as safe patient handling devices, cubicle curtains, SPS items, etc. as required according to manufacturer's recommendations.

Loads linen carts with linen items and delivers linen items to using areas using established PAR levels. Receives linen carts from the soiled-linen rooms and other areas as identified.

Accounts for loss or damage to textiles and submits the appropriate documents and reports to the Supervisor.

Maintains accurate data to assist with completing the facility Textile Care Management Report.

The data includes operations and cost for linen distribution; labor, utilities, textiles, transportation, and depreciation of equipment. Work Schedule: Thursday- Monday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
