The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking a non-permanent IT Systems Administrator to support the Northwest Region’s (NWR) end-user computing environment, delivering frontline technical services that keep desktops, laptops, tablets, mobile, and peripheral systems reliable, secure, and operational for staff and project teams.

In this role, you will provide hands-on troubleshooting, installation, configuration, maintenance, and customer support for hardware, software, operating systems, and mobile technologies, ensuring technology readiness for regional operations and high-profile transportation infrastructure and mega projects.

Working closely with regional IT staff and business partners, the position will help maintain system performance, resolve incidents efficiently, and contribute to a stable, secure computing environment that enables the agency’s mission.

Our top candidate will have foundational systems administration knowledge, problem-solving and diagnostics ability, familiarity with Windows and mobile platforms, and clear communication and documentation skills.


What to Expect

NWR Technology Services Team provides services to over 2000 employees among 61 sites in a six-county area, including NWR and the agency’s Urban Mobility, Access and Mega Programs Division (UMAM) including I-405/SR 167 Corridor, Puget Sound Gateway, SR 520 Bridge Replacement, Interstate Bridge Replacement (IBR) and HOV, Tolling, Aviation, Rail and Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement, in the Puget Sound area that are making multi-modal investments in partnership with local agencies on WSDOT’s facilities.


Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the IT Systems Administrator – Entry will:

  • Use existing technologies to automate software deployment. Follow change-management procedures for agency adoption of the deployment application and procedures.
  • Routinely test computer hardware, software, and operating systems to ensure automated processes are updated and will work against current security patches and environment.
  • Create, implement, maintain, manage and troubleshoot components of the System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) environment.
  • Provide support, installation, control and maintenance of the SCCM environment for the NWR.
  • Administer the pre-deployment testing involving complex application installation and functionality problem resolution, software package creation, creation of targeted PC collections, and critical patch management for the region.
  • Write and publish software deployment packages to the statewide SCCM application catalog utilizing SCCM administration console.
  • Create and provide support, installation, control, and maintenance of user accounts and access in the agency Active Directory environment for all NWR and UMAM programs.
  • Provide quality assurance testing through skilled support for routine trouble issues.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • System Administration Troubleshooting & Problem Solving: Demonstrated experience with system administration troubleshooting skills and problem solving with an ability to formulate solutions using existing workflows and to manage assigned work priorities.
  • Technical Installation & Support Services: Technical and operational knowledge and experience providing technical consulting and performing installation of IT hardware and software using existing procedures.
  • Enterprise Tools & Platform Support: Experience as a team member supporting M365, Microsoft Operating Systems, Microsoft Office Suite, Systems Center Configuration Manager and Active Directory Group Policy Manager, iOS and standard Adobe products.
  • Workload & Task Management: Ability to manage multiple service requests and projects simultaneously; organize, track, and meet deadlines; communicate status clearly; and adapt to changing operational priorities in a fast-paced support environment.
  • Exceptional Communication: Skills to communicate effectively with customers, vendors, peers, and management.
  • Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
  • Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.


In addition to the competencies above, the following are also required:

  • Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to use powered and non-powered tools and operate mechanical lifts.
  • Ability to travel to various sites throughout the state.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Cybersecurity Practices & Technologies: Extensive experience in cybersecurity technologies including vulnerability management, intrusion detection and prevention, application and network security, incident response, anti-virus/malware management, or security assessments obtained through formal education and/or significant professional experience.
  • Security Standards & Frameworks: Working knowledge of cybersecurity requirements such as WaTech Security Standards, Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards, CIS Critical Security Controls, and NIST Cybersecurity Framework.

  • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
