The Opportunity

WSDOT is seeking an IT Systems Administrator to support the North Central Region (NCR) maintenance asset management systems, including the Highway Activities Tracking System (HATS) and Automated Vehicle Locator (AVL), IPads, which are critical to tracking daily highway maintenance operations and ensuring reliable service delivery across the region.

This position will provide technical support for mobile, web, and vehicle-mounted technologies by installing, configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting computer hardware, software, mobile devices, and truck-mounted IT systems; assist users; and coordinate with Headquarters (HQ) to ensure consistent system performance in a 24/7 operational environment.

A strong candidate will possess foundational systems administration knowledge, customer-focused technical support skills, problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities, and the ability to communicate effectively while supporting diverse users and field operations.


What to Expect

The WSDOT HQ Maintenance Division is responsible for $655 million budget and operation and maintenance of over 20,000 lane miles of roadway, 3500 bridges and structures, as well as over 800,000 individual features such as roadway and Stormwater systems, drainage, traffic barriers and roadside vegetation.

The Maintenance Operations Technology Group operates within the HQ Maintenance Operations Branch and is responsible for the development, maintenance, training and implementation of technology within the Maintenance Division.

This position supports the NCR and assists HQ with supporting South Central (SCR) and Eastern Regions (ER).


Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the IT Systems Administrator – Entry will:

  • Support the daily operation of HATS web and mobile application and Repair Cost Estimating (RCE) Tool to include identifying and assist with resolving operation problems; promptly respond to user technical support requests.
  • Investigate and troubleshoot hardware, software, and connectivity faults.
  • Serve as a system administrator for the NCR and assists HQ with SCR and ER AVL system.
  • Drive and operate heavy equipment within maintenance yards to perform troubleshooting and repair of AVL systems and equipment; ensure proper functionality through hands-on testing of AVL equipment.
  • Resolve installation problems, coordinate with vendors, and execute the use of specialized test and calibration equipment.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and conduct prescribed preventative maintenance procedures.
  • Test and troubleshoot on-board CANBUS, ISOBUS, environmental switching equipment, pulse-width modulator amplifiers,
  • Assist HQ with the daily operation of the Remote Weather Information System hardware, software, and communications technologies.
  • Assist HQ with determining hardware and software needs of maintenance operations and assigned projects in the development of future Maintenance Management System.
  • Assist in defining user/client requirements for technical services.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

Systems Administration & Technical Troubleshooting

  • Demonstrated ability to independently diagnose and resolve technical issues related to IPad software and hardware, across web and mobile platforms, including system administration, log analysis, SQL querying, and network troubleshooting.
  • Skills to apply critical thinking and technical knowledge to ensure continuous system functionality and user support.

AVL & Mobile Technology Support

  • Demonstrated ability to configure, and troubleshoot AVL systems, including web-based applications, mobile data hardware, and vehicle-integrated electronics.
  • Skills to apply basic diagnostic and coordination skills to ensure reliable system performance, support operational safety, and enable accurate data collection for agency decision-making.

Remote Sensor & Field Technology Management

  • Demonstrated ability to manage and maintain remote environmental sensor networks, including diagnosing hardware and communication issues, coordinating preventative and corrective maintenance, and ensuring data accuracy to support operational and public safety decisions.

Transportation Maintenance Operations Knowledge

  • Working knowledge of transportation maintenance operations and the ability to align technical support activities with field and operational needs.

Customer Service & Technical Communication

  • Proven skill to deliver inclusive, responsive, and accessible technical support and training; communicate effectively across roles and regions; clearly document solutions; and build user confidence through collaborative problem-solving.

In addition to the competencies above, the following are also required:

  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate state-owned vehicles.
  • Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • GPS & Surveying Technology Knowledge: Understanding of GPS technology and highway surveying methods and concepts as applied to maintenance and field operations.
  • Adaptive IT Solutions Delivery: Demonstrated ability to independently coordinate and implement technology solutions that adapt to evolving business needs and support maintenance operations objectives.
  • Equipment Operation & Field Testing: Ability to safely operate heavy equipment within maintenance yard environments to support system testing, evaluation, and troubleshooting activities.


In addition to the preferred competencies above, the following is also required:

  • A class A CDL; Ability to safely Operate heavy equipment within maintenance yard environments for testing and evaluation activities.
