Job Description

Summary

This job involves managing and securing Oracle and SQL databases for the Navy's shipyard IT systems, including monitoring performance, applying security updates, and troubleshooting issues to keep data reliable and protected.

It also includes supporting users with installations, training, and problem-solving.

A good fit would be someone with hands-on experience in database administration and cybersecurity, who enjoys working in a structured government environment focused on defense.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience at GS-11 level or equivalent in maintaining and monitoring Oracle or SQL Server databases for reliability and accessibility
  • Proficiency in performing system checks, reviewing logs, and resolving performance or availability issues
  • Knowledge of applying Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs), security patches, vulnerability scans, and Information Assurance (IA) updates
  • Experience planning, testing, and implementing vendor patches and configuration changes in Oracle or SQL environments
  • Skills in database analysis, design, programming, installation, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance
  • Ability to provide customer support, including installation, configuration, data analysis, and training

Full Job Description

You will serve as an IT SPECIALIST (DATAMGT/INFOSEC) in the Database Administration (DBA)/SQL/Oracle Support Branch (10915), IT Infrastructure & Operations Division (1091), Information Technology & Cybersecurity (ITACS) Office (109) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience maintaining and monitoring Oracle and/or Structured Query Language (SQL) server databases to ensure reliability and accessibility.

Experience performing regular system checks, reviewing logs, and taking corrective actions to resolve performance or availability issues.

Experience applying database Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs), security patches, vulnerability scans, and Information Assurance (IA) updates to safeguard data and systems.

Experience planning, testing, and applying vendor patches, and configuration changes to Oracle and/or SQL Server environments.

  • You will monitor database log files, apply security patches required by Information Assurance Vulnerability Management (IAVMs) or other Information Assurance (IA) mandates, and apply vendor hotfixes and patches.
  • You will implement Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIGs) to ensure database software/systems reliability and accessibility; and to prevent and defend against unauthorized access to systems, networks, and data.
  • You will perform complex Oracle and/or SQL Server database software and system analysis, design, programming, installation, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance functions for corporate database systems and applications.
  • You will coordinate the work and scheduling of the installation of subject area applications and databases, such as Oracle patches and upgrades, IA updates, Central Design Agency (CDA) application, software, and data releases.
  • You will deliver customer support services including installation, configuration, data analysis, troubleshooting, customer assistance and/or training, in response to customer reported incidents through the submission of appropriate work tickets.
  • You will coordinate testing and training for user departments, other IT personnel and management for subject area IT applications, software tools, database systems and data flow processes.
