Full Job Description

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is seeking an experienced editor to lead South Carolina Wildlife magazine, a highly respected bimonthly publication focused on conservation, wildlife, and outdoor heritage.

This role blends editorial leadership, photography and storytelling with business management and supervisory duties.

Under limited supervision of the Director of Creative Services, the editor directs the magazine’s editorial vision and daily operations while ensuring high quality content, strict deadlines, and responsible budget management.

Successful incumbents must:

  • Lead all editorial, production, marketing and outreach efforts for six bimonthly issues annually
  • Oversee planning, budgeting, scheduling, photography, writing, editing and design
  • Produce original written and photographic content for the magazine
  • Coordinate marketing and subscription growth strategies
  • Represent the magazine in outreach, education and public engagement initiatives
  • Serve as a liaison with agency leadership, vendors, freelancers and partners

Requirements

A bachelor's degree and four (4) years of experience in the development and dissemination of informational material.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English, or related field
  • Minimum of two (2) years of professional experience in magazine writing, editing, and layout experience or equivalent natural resources focused public sector or nonprofit experience
  • Strong background in photography and visual storytelling
  • Working knowledge of long form print production, marketing, and subscriber services
  • Experience in natural resources or conservation journalism preferred
  • Working knowledge of state procurement and accounting requirements preferred
  • State government public information experience strongly preferred
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite

Additional Information

  • Ability to work outside normal business hours and travel statewide
  • Ability to work in rough field conditions and lift heavy objects
  • Have a strong familiarity with South Carolina’s natural resources and outdoor recreation
This position is based at the SCDNR headquarters in West Columbia South Carolina and requires in person work.
