Job DescriptionAre you an experienced public information specialist with a talent for strategic communications, public relations, and writing? Do you have a mastery of traditional and digital media, and a background relevant to outreach efforts regarding education, workforce development, and/or state government?
Our Deputy Director of Marketing & Communications serves within the Communications division in Columbia. As ambassadors for the agency, individuals on the Communications team share the amazing work and accomplishments of DEW, SC Works, and the Coordinating Council for Workforce Development with the public. The incumbent will communicate expectations and provide support in alignment with the agency's mission and strategic planning. This role will serve as a liaison between DEW staff, SC Works partners, the Coordinating Council for Workforce Development members, and other key stakeholders. The selected individual will also help plan, develop, direct, and execute a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy on behalf of the agency.
Key Responsibilities- Evaluate and develop programs to increase public and internal awareness of agency activities.
- Track communication, media events, outreach, and activities for analysis.
- Author speeches, quotes, business letters, articles, editorials, letters, and reports for key officials.
- Prepare and approve outreach campaigns and branding.
- Establish and maintain social media presence aligned with agency initiatives.
- Direct a professional public information staff in complex assignments.
- Evaluate and develop programs to increase public awareness of agency activities.
- Lead the agency's relationship with the state's news media.
- Supervise team members and support department efforts.
- Maintain a professional work environment that complies with EEO and promote equal opportunity, anti-harassment, and other agency HR and safety policies.

Requirements
Education and ExperienceA bachelor's degree and four (4) years of responsible experience in journalism, mass media communications, public relations, or related field.
Additional RequirementsKnowledge of journalistic principles and practices and techniques of disseminating information to the public through new media. Extensive knowledge of English usage, spelling, punctuation, and grammar and of writing and editing techniques. Ability to creatively and effectively write, edit and design reports and other publications covering agency subject matter within timelines and deadlines. Ability to communicate and speak effectively in public. Position may require overnight travel; position drives routinely as part of their job; position requires overtime work.
