Job Description

Summary

This role involves creating and sharing information about the Department of Natural Resources through websites, social media, videos, and print materials to keep staff, the public, and media informed.

It also includes acting as the main contact for the media on important issues, managing community outreach, and possibly leading a small team.

A good fit would be someone with strong writing and design skills who enjoys communicating complex environmental topics clearly and building relationships with the community.

Job Title: Information Specialist IV
Location: Salt Lake City

Job Description:

The Information Specialist IV supports the Division’s mission by distributing accurate and timely information to staff, the public, media, and stakeholders through digital media, traditional media, and web platforms.

Provides design, layout, and print management for the Division website and materials. Serves as a media liaison and spokesperson on sensitive or high-profile issues.

Reports to the Division Director and coordinates with the Agency Public Information Officer. This position aligns with DNR communication structures and strengthens public affairs oversight.

Manages public affairs and community involvement activities for the Division. Develops and disseminates information with significant impact on public and governmental relations.

Acts as the primary spokesperson for the Division. Plans and executes communication strategies for programs, public hearings, environmental issues, and emergencies.

May supervise communication staff and conduct training for staff or the public.

Requirements

  • Writes or drafts correspondence, reports, documents and/or other written materials.
  • Creates, produces and implements instructional videos / web content.
  • Edits written material for accuracy, format, and arrangement of material.
  • Selects, produces, and/or completes artwork, layout and/or photographic or related services.
  • Receives, researches and responds to incoming questions or complaints; provides information, explains policy and procedures, and/or facilitates a resolution.
  • Provides technical assistance on agency issues, services, program(s), etc.
  • Coordinates and/or acts as a liaison between agency or work unit and other agencies, work units, organizations, suppliers, etc.
  • Maintains and/or creates files or record keeping systems. Sorts, labels, files and retrieves documents, or other materials.
  • Communicate Division updates internally and externally.
  • Create multimedia content for print and digital avenues to educate the public on the Division’s programs.
  • Lead in the creation, production and implementation of instructional videos / web content.
  • Write and edit material for accuracy, format, and arrangement of material.
  • Prepare training materials / guides and coordinate Division training opportunities with outside agencies.
  • Interact with media when needed. Including assisting with press releases, press conferences, media interviews, etc.
  • Manage the Division’s social media accounts.
  • Collaborate on creating and maintaining the Division’s brand and style guidelines.

Qualifications

  • Writing and grammar skills.
  • Proficient in photographing, graphic design and creating video content.
  • Professional skills in the use of web content management and content editing.
  • Excellent communications skills relating to researching, writing, editing and distributing press releases.
  • Judgement in gauging public interest and response to stories and information.
  • Working knowledge of social media platforms.
  • Demonstrable skills in public relations and community relationship building.
  • Working knowledge of strategic communications.

The Ideal Candidate
  • The ability to communicate information and ideas clearly and concisely, both visually and in writing using proper spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Excellent communication skills including researching, writing, editing and distributing press releases.
  • Strong background in public relations, strategic communications and community relations.
  • Experience in journalistic writing, photography, graphic design and video recording content.
  • Familiarity with and expertise in user interface and user experience, design and implementation.
  • Knowledge of the standards and best practices of graphic design.
