Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading a team of mechanics in maintaining and repairing heavy industrial equipment for dry docks at a naval shipyard, including systems for water, steam, and waste management.

A good fit would be an experienced mechanic with strong leadership skills who enjoys hands-on technical work and mentoring others in a fast-paced, operational environment.

Key Requirements

  • Proven ability to lead or supervise a team of mechanics
  • Expert knowledge in dismantling, inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, and testing industrial equipment
  • Experience with pumps, valves, mixers, agitators, and related machinery in sewage, steam, water, air handling, and waste treatment systems
  • Skills in performing preventive maintenance, including cleaning, lubricating, adjusting, and aligning equipment
  • Ability to conduct security watch inspections and ensure continuous operation of flood alarms and dewatering systems
  • Competence in training and mentoring less experienced employees on proper work methods
  • Familiarity with operating equipment for flooding and dewatering graving docks during ship docking/undocking

Full Job Description

You will serve as an EXPERT INDUSTRIAL EQUIPMENT MECHANIC LEADER in Shop 99 of the Production Resources Department of PSNS and IMF.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Major Duties:

  • You will dismantle, inspect, troubleshoot, repair, reassemble, and test industrial dry dock equipment and machinery in support of sewage, steam, distribution, saltwater, freshwater, air handling and waste treatment systems.
  • You will remove, repair, install and align reducing valves, safety valves, stop valves, sluice valve guides and discs, pumps, mixers and agitators.
  • You will perform periodic preventive maintenance requiring the dismantling, cleaning, lubricating, repairing, and adjusting/aligning of dry dock support equipment.
  • You will perform security watch inspections, on various shifts, to ensure continuous operation of flood alarms and automatic dewatering equipment.
  • You will lead others to operate equipment used to flood and dewater graving docks as part of docking and undocking evolutions.
  • You will pass on instructions received from supervisors and provide overview of tasks to be performed to other workers.
  • You will keep the supervisor apprised of potential problems, controversial issues, and recommend corrective actions.
  • You will train and mentor less skilled employees; demonstrates proper work methods and discusses viable alternatives, considerations, etc.
