Summary

This entry-level job supports the U.S.

Military Entrance Processing Station in Hawaii by handling paperwork and records for people applying to join the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Space Force, or Coast Guard.

About the Position: The Military Entrance Processing Station plays a vital role in maintaining the nation's military might by ensuring that each new member of the Armed Forces: Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard; meets the high mental, moral & medical standards required by the DoD & the military services.

Every MEPS represents state of the art in testing, examining & processing applicants for enlistment into the Armed Forces. This will be a permanent position.

Specialized Experience: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job.

Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, including: Maintaining applicant records by updating account information; Utilizing office automation software to update account information; Obtaining data from applicants for completion of personnel records; Maintaining applicant records in accordance with an established filing system; Utilizing appropriate formatting to create written correspondence and/or documents.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

-OR- Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.

For this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions below: Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

-OR- Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60.

Add the two percentages. Proficiency Required: This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.

Time in Grade Requirement: Candidates may be advanced without time restriction to positions up to GS-05 if the position to be filled is no more than two grades above the lowest grade the employee held within the preceding 52 weeks under his or her latest non-temporary competitive appointment.

In addition, if your step reflects '00', you must include your current salary for each position. Major Duties:

  • As a Human Resources Assistant (Military/Office Automation), you will:
  • Provide assistance to visitors by directing them to appropriate points of contact within assigned processing center
  • Answer and/or forward telephone calls to appropriate personnel
  • Administer pre-oath briefings to inform applicants regarding processing center procedures
  • Maintain office security by controlling access (i.e. issuing visitor badges, maintaining visitor logs, etc.) via the reception desk
  • Operate a variety of office automation equipment to prepare enlistment and other military personnel documents.
  • Perform records management of electronic and paper applicant records
  • Obtain applicants' fingerprints to initiate a background investigation
  • Perform quality review of military applicant records, packets, and forms to ensure compliance with all requirements
  • Prepare recruitment and other military personnel documents for individuals enlisting or reenlisting into military service
