Job Description

Summary

This job is for a traveling archivist who helps local governments and history groups in Michigan preserve and share important historical records through fieldwork, training, and workshops.

It focuses on areas in the northern parts of the state and involves creating materials for record care and emergency planning.

A good fit would be someone passionate about history with experience in archives or preservation who enjoys traveling and community outreach.

Key Requirements

  • Master’s degree in history, art history, museum studies, anthropology, American studies, architecture, architectural history, urban planning, library/information science, historic preservation, or archival management
  • For Historian 9: No specific professional experience required
  • For Historian 10: One year of professional experience in studying, preserving, analyzing, interpreting, and presenting history, artifacts, records, or sites equivalent to Historian 9
  • For Historian P11: Two years of such professional experience equivalent to Historian 9, including one year equivalent to Historian 10; or three years of experience recording, preserving, and presenting Michigan history at a museum, historical site, archives, publication office, or preservation office equivalent to History Specialist 10
  • Ability to travel extensively across Michigan, especially northern Lower Peninsula, Upper Peninsula, and islands
  • Skills in fieldwork, training local organizations, developing instructional materials, and coordinating workshops on emergency preparedness and disaster recovery

POSITION IS BEING FILLED THROUGH A LIMITED-TERM APPOINTMENT.
MAY LAST UP TWO YEARS WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO BE EXTENDED BUT WITH NO GUARANTEE

MAY ALSO HAVE THE ABILITY TO GO PERMANENT BUT WITH NO GUARANTEE

The position contributes to the daily operation of the Collections Services Unit in the Archives of Michgan Section. Specifically, the Traveling Archivist position works with local governments (county, city, townships, and villages) and local history organizations to identify, preserve, and facilitate public access to archival/historical records. This position involves fieldwork and training across the state, with an emphasis on assisting communities in Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula, Upper Peninsula, and surrounding islands. The traveling archivist participates in the Save Michigan History program and contributes to the development of instructional training materials for the care, management, and transfer of archival collections. The position assists in coordinating statewide workshops on emergency preparedness and disaster recovery and the development of a cohort of volunteer cultural heritage "first responders" across Michigan. This position is funded for two years through the Mellon Foundation.

Requirements

Education
Possession of a master’s degree in history, art history, museum studies, anthropology, American studies, architecture, architectural history, urban planning, library/information science, historic preservation, or archival management.

Experience

Historian 9
No specific type or amount is required.
Historian 10
One year of professional experience involving the study, preservation, analysis, interpretation, and preservation of history, historical artifacts, records, and sites equivalent to an Historian 9.
Historian P11
Two years of professional experience involving the study, preservation, analysis, interpretation, and preservation of history, historical artifacts, records, and sites equivalent to an Historian, including one year equivalent to an Historian 10; or, three years of professional experience recording, preserving, and presenting Michigan history, historical artifacts, records, and sites at a museum, historical site, archives, publication office, or historical site preservation office equivalent to a History Specialist 10.
