Job Description

Summary

This job involves assisting in a prison library by helping inmates access books, legal materials, and general resources, while also maintaining collections and updating library policies.

It's a supportive role in a high-security environment at a Michigan correctional facility.

A good fit would be someone organized and detail-oriented with library experience or education, who is comfortable working in corrections and has a clean criminal record.

  • For Library Technician 8: No specific experience required
  • For Library Technician 9: One year of experience equivalent to Library Technician 8
  • For Library Technician E10: Two years of experience equivalent to Library Technician, including one year as Technician 9
  • For Library Technician 11: Three years of experience equivalent to Library Technician, including one year as E10
  • Alternative: Four years of office support experience in a library setting, with two years at experienced (E7) level, may substitute for education
  • No felony convictions or pending felony charges; must complete any sentences including parole or probation

Full Job Description

A full range of duties as library assistant, in addition to providing law and general library services to corrections clients. Participates in policy and procedure revision; development and maintenance of law library collection.

Requirements

Education
Completion of two years of college (60 semester or 90 term credits) with 15 semester (24 term) credits in library technology, audio-visual technology, or media technology.
Experience
Library Technician 8

One year of experience equivalent to a Library Technician 8.
Library Technician E10

Qualifications

Four years of office support experience in a library setting, two years of which shall have been equivalent to the experienced (E7) level, may be substituted for the education requirement.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification.

All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training. PLEASE NOTE: Overnight travel may be required for NCNET.
