This job involves hands-on maintenance of highways and roadside areas, such as clearing debris, repairing signs and drainage, and operating small equipment or trucks to transport materials.
Workers also handle traffic control and respond to emergencies like bad weather.
It's a good fit for someone who enjoys outdoor physical work, can handle tough conditions, and is willing to get a commercial driver's license quickly.
Performs manual labor during roadway and right of way maintenance activities.
Areas of work may include, but are not limited to signage and pavement markings, driveway installation and maintenance, construction of drainage appurtenances, maintenance of drainage appurtenances, litter/debris removal, vegetation management, bridge maintenance and patching/paving.
Operates small equipment and standard dump truck while hauling materials and supplies to and from job sites. Flags traffic during various maintenance activities.
Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspection in accordance with the department's most current rules, policies and procedures for fleet safety.
Performs on-call services for after-hour emergencies and duties during inclement weather events. Performs other related duties as assigned.
There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.
Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
