The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 to join the Northwest Region (NWR) team out of Seattle, WA.
Under the direction of a Highway Maintenance Supervisor, this journey-level position serves as a key member of the regional maintenance organization.
The role operates a wide range of highway equipment and tools to perform maintenance and repair of highways and highway structures, supporting the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce.
This position carries out a variety of skilled maintenance tasks and may serve as a crew lead in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3.
Safety of the traveling public and fellow employees is a top priority and must guide all decisions and work activities.
This position supports WSDOT’s strategic plan by ensuring work is performed in accordance with agency policies, quality expectations, safety requirements, and stewardship standards that contribute to Washington’s long-term resilience.
The role is also expected to help maintain a workplace culture grounded in respect, equal opportunity, and a strong sense of belonging.
What to Expect
These positions perform work that is often physical in nature and performed primarily outdoors and often next to high-volume, high-speed traffic that may require standing for extended periods of time; HMW2 may work at elevated heights above 25 feet over land or water.
Work may also include traversing in rough, steep, and uneven terrain. A typical schedule is Monday through Thursday, 40-hours per week, for 4, 10-hour days.
Nightshift, weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies.

Qualifications
This is a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 position.
However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at a lower level in the classification series based on candidate qualifications, providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal “in-training” plan.
To qualify at the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 level, the following competencies are required:

Highway Maintenance Expertise: Demonstrated skills in highway maintenance practices, including pavement repair, drainage systems, erosion control, vegetation management, sign and guardrail installation, and debris removal.
Ability to assess maintenance needs and perform repairs to highway structures, roadside features, and landscapes.
In addition to the above, the following competencies, certifications, and licenses are required at any level:
Certifications: The ability to obtain a Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License within twelve (12) months of hire.
The ability to obtain a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card within six (6) months of hire; The ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire and maintain valid First Aid/CPR Certification.
Safety Awareness & Compliance: Strong understanding of workplace safety procedures and commitment to following safety policies, including confined space entry, fall protection, and hazardous material handling.
Ability to participate in the creation and implementation of Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASP) and attend regular safety training.

This is a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 position.

The base salaries for each level are: Highway Maintenance Worker 1: $59,616 – $72,729
