Summary

This entry-level job involves working on a striping crew to maintain highways by removing old road markings, setting up traffic controls, and operating equipment to keep roads safe and clear.

The OpportunityWSDOT is currently seeking multiple Highway Maintenance Workers on a non-permanent and seasonal basis in the Seattle area.

The purpose of the Northwest Region (NWR) Highway Maintenance Program is to ensure the highway infrastructure, WSDOT facilities and fleet are maintained in good working order; to operate the highway system effectively and safely; to respond to natural disasters, weather events, construction impacts and emergencies; and to provide environmental stewardship of lands that WSDOT owns or maintains.

Under the direction of a Highway Maintenance Supervisor, these entry-level positions are members of the regional maintenance organization.

Operating a wide variety of highway equipment and tools, this position is responsible for maintenance and repair of highways and highway structures to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce.

These positions perform a variety of skilled maintenance tasks. The safety of the traveling public and fellow employees is a high priority and must be considered in every decision and activity.


What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the will:

Perform traffic control per Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and Work Zone Traffic Control Manual (M54-44) standards including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging.

Operate pickups, with Variable Message Systems (VMS) and arrow boards for advanced warning in mobile traffic control operations.

  • Respond to work requests from internal and external customers.
  • Assist with loading materials.
  • Work with higher-level maintenance workers the installation and holes, sign/post replacement, and graffiti removal.
  • Removal of crosswalks, stop bars, arrows and various other markings using various hand tools.
  • Operate Class C highway equipment as designated on the approved Department of Transportation Equipment List (TEF) for highway maintenance.
  • Operating pickups, to assist in assembling signs.
  • Perform daily equipment checks including performing minor repair on equipment.
  • In addition to one of the above, the following are also performed:

    • Primarily outdoors, year-round, in all weather conditions, and during both day and night shifts.
    • Adjacent to high-volume, high-speed traffic, and near bodies of water.
    • At ground level, in confined spaces, and at elevated heights (above 25 feet, over land or water).
    • Enter, exit, and operate heavy vehicles and equipment repeatedly.
    • Traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain.
    • Climb stairs, ladders, and embankments as well as carry, and manipulate tools, equipment, and materials weighing up to 50 pounds (and occasionally heavier).
    • Push, pull, and operate hand and power tools, as well as machinery controls requiring exertion.


    Qualifications
    To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

    • Basic Highway Maintenance Skills: Basic understanding of highway maintenance tasks.
    • Traffic Control & Work Zone Operations: Knowledge of traffic control practices following the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Ability to plan and implement safe work zones, including flagging, signage, and the use of cones/barrels.
    • Licensing & Certification: Possession of an unrestricted valid driver’s license to legally operate vehicles in Washington State. Ability to operate C equipment.

      The ability to obtain a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card within six (6) months of hire. The ability to obtain within 6 months of hire and maintain valid First Aid/CPR Certification.

      Safety Awareness & Compliance: Strong understanding of workplace safety procedures and commitment to following safety policies, including confined space entry, fall protection, and hazardous material handling.

      Ability to participate in the creation and implementation of Pre- Activity Safety Plans (PASP) and attend regular safety training.

    • Technical & Administrative Proficiency: Skilled in the use of electronic systems for timekeeping, maintenance tracking, inventory management, and cost estimating (e.g. HATS). Proficient in standard computer applications, including Microsoft Office and email communication.
    • Teamwork & Leadership: Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently in the field.
    • Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
    • Service-Oriented: Demonstrates a willingness to take action to meet the needs of others.


    It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

    • Traffic Control Operations & MUTCD Compliance: Experience performing traffic control per published highway standards (MUTCD), including planning, setting signs, cones or barrels, and flagging.
    • Intermediate Computer & Microsoft Office Proficiency: Intermediate computer skills to operate various computer programs, including Microsoft Office applications.
    • Effective Oral & Written Communication: Experience communicating clearly and effectively with multiple audiences, both verbally and in writing.
    • Workplace Safety Compliance & Safe Work Practices: Experience adhering to safety policies and demonstrating diligence in performing work safely.


    Important Notes

    • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
    • This position is not eligible for remote work.
    • The standard schedule is four (4) 10-hour shifts, Monday through Thursday.
    • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
    • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.

      For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements.
