The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking a seasonal Highway Maintenance Worker 2 to provide traffic control and highway maintenance support for the Northwest Region Pavement Marking crews and the Area 51 Sign crew.

This position performs skilled work on highway striping, thermoplastic and raised pavement markings, and sign installation and maintenance to ensure safe, efficient travel.

A top candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, the ability to operate highway maintenance equipment effectively, and skill in performing pavement marking and sign tasks.


What to Expect

A typical schedule is Monday through Thursday, 40-hours per week, for 4, 10-hour shifts.

Days, nights, weekends and holidays may be required for business needs or to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies. Travel within the region is an expectation of the position.

Overnight travel may also be required. Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:

  • Perform traffic control for Northwest Region Striping, Thermoplastic, Raised Pavement Markings, and Area 51 Sign crews.
  • Operate Class A, B and C highway for highway maintenance.
  • Operate pickups, Traffic Mounted Attenuators (TMA's) with Variable Message Systems (VMS), and arrow boards for advanced warning in mobile traffic control operations.
  • Respond to work requests from internal and external customers.
  • Provide routine maintenance of highway signage and pavement markings.
  • Work with higher-level maintenance workers for the installation and removal of crosswalks, stop bars, arrows, and various other markings.
  • Fill in as a Raised Pavement Marking (RPM) setter on the RPM truck as needed.
  • Assist in assembling signs using a variety of equipment and tools such as drills and rivet guns.
  • Clear brush for sign visibility using weed eaters and loggers.
  • Track and document daily work activities within the Highway Activity Tracking System (HATS), documentation logs, and Excel for supervisory or management review.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:

Highway Maintenance Expertise: Demonstrated skills in highway maintenance practices, including pavement repair, drainage systems, erosion control, vegetation management, sign and guardrail installation, and debris removal.

Ability to assess maintenance needs and perform repairs to highway structures, roadside features, and landscapes.

  • Equipment Operation: Ability to operate and maintain various Class A, B, and C highway maintenance equipment, tools, and vehicles following WSDOT standards. Ability to safely transport heavy equipment and materials between job sites.
  • Traffic Control & Work Zone Operations: Knowledge of traffic control practices following the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Ability to plan and implement safe work zones, including flagging, signage, and the use of cones/barrels.
  • Safety Awareness & Compliance: Strong understanding of workplace safety procedures and commitment to following safety policies, including confined space entry, fall protection, and hazardous material handling.

    Ability to participate in the creation and implementation of PreActivity Safety Plans (PASP) and attend regular safety training.

  • Technical & Administrative Proficiency: Skilled in the use of electronic systems for timekeeping, maintenance tracking, inventory management, and cost estimating (e.g., HATS, WZDB, TSMS). Proficient in standard computer applications, including Microsoft Office and email communication.
  • Teamwork & Leadership: Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently in the field. Capable of leading a crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, demonstrating sound decision-making and leadership skills.
  • Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
  • Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.

  • In addition to the above, the following are also required:

    • Possession of an unrestricted Class A CDL with N endorsement.
    • Ability to obtain a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card within six (6) months of hire.
    • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid First Aid/CPR certification within six (6) months of hire.
    • Ability to traverse steep, rough, and uneven terrain.
    • Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing 50 pounds or more in a safe manner.
    • Ability to work varying shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and to respond to un-scheduled work, call-outs, or emergencies.
    • Ability to travel within the region, including overnight.


    It is preferred that qualified candidates also demonstrate:

    • Experience performing traffic control per published highway standards (MUTCD) including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging.
    • Intermediate computer skills to operate various computer programs, such as Microsoft Office applications, internal WSDOT applications, and the internet.
    • Experience in effective communication to multiple audiences, both orally and in writing.
    • Experience adhering to safety policies and diligence in performing work in a safe manner.


    Important Notes

    • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
    • This seasonal work opportunity is expected to last from April through October.
    • Travel within the region is an expectation of the position and may be required on a regular, sporadic, or as needed basis. Overnight travel may be required.
    • This position is not eligible for remote work.
    • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County. An additional 10% assignment pay is also included.
    • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
