The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking multiple Highway Maintenance Worker 1 (Rest Area Attendant) positions to support the Olympic Region Highway Maintenance Program in maintaining safe, clean, and fully operational rest area facilities for the traveling public.
These positions play a key role in promoting highway safety by reducing driver fatigue and providing accessible, reliable spaces for motorists and commercial drivers.
Under the direction of the Highway Maintenance Supervisor, employees help ensure highway infrastructure, facilities, and surrounding environments are maintained to high standards.
This work supports emergency response efforts, environmental stewardship, and the safe and efficient movement of people and goods across Washington’s transportation system.

What to Expect
The position may require working weekends and holidays, including responding to unscheduled or emergency call-outs.
Employees must be able to report to the assigned duty station within 60 minutes of an after-hours call and be available to work alternate shifts, nights, and extended hours as needed.
This role requires the ability to respond to emergency situations in all weather conditions, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Work may be performed independently or as part of a team, and occasional call-back may be required.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
Safety Awareness & Compliance: Knowledge of workplace safety procedures and commitment to following safety policies, including traffic awareness, and hazard mitigation in public and highway environments.
Ability to participate in the creation and implementation of Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASP) and attend regular safety training.

Important Notes
This position involves physically demanding work performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions, including exposure to traffic, heavy winds, and other hazards during both day and night operations.
Employees work near high-volume, high-speed traffic and may perform tasks at ground level or in confined spaces. Duties include operating equipment, performing manual labor, and climbing ladders.
The role requires frequent bending, twisting, and standing or walking for extended periods.
Employees may also be exposed to hazardous materials, chemicals, and environmental conditions, including fuels, solvents, hot asphalt, and other potentially unsafe substances, as well as general sanitation-related conditions.
In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
