This job involves reviewing and auditing cancer data from hospitals to ensure it meets quality standards, fixing errors, and sometimes coding and classifying cancer cases yourself.
It also includes helping train others who handle cancer reporting in West Virginia.
A good fit would be someone with experience in health data management, especially cancer registries, who is detail-oriented and committed to following privacy and medical rules.
This position reviews cancer data submitted by in- and out-of-state reporting hospitals to ensure compliance with current policies/standards and also researches/resolves standard errors and deficiencies.
As part of the quality assurance section, this position takes part in the annual auditing of WV reporting facilities.
This position at times will code, stage, and abstract cases of cancer and benign brain and central nervous system tumors initially seen, diagnosed, and/or treated at WV hospitals and diagnostic/treatment facilities.
Work is performed in compliance with all state, federal, and facility regulations, including HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996), and in compliance with internationally recognized standards for cancer identification, staging, and coding.
In addition, this person may contribute to training internal abstractors and cancer registrars who report to the WV Cancer Registry.
Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) certification is required. Employment is contingent upon maintaining an active ODS credential and completing all necessary continuing education.
