Full Job Description

The Mason Conservation District is seeking to fill at least one Field Crew Member position to join our team.

The Field Crew Member position supports the District’s mission by performing various duties to implement and maintain habitat restoration projects.

The successful candidate will have prior proven ability to work efficiently and effectively on a team to implement restoration activities including planting, maintenance of planting sites using power tools, and treatment of invasive plants with the use of herbicides.

This position is supervised by the Habitat Restoration Crew Lead.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Core duties and responsibilities include the following.
  • Work directly under the Habitat Restoration Crew Lead to complete various tasks including planting maintenance, planting, and invasive plant treatment (chemical and manual).
  • Safely utilize tools such as brushcutters, machetes, and shovels to maintain planting sites.
  • Plant both bare root and potted-stock plants.
  • Occasional operation of non-motorized watercraft used to access select work sites.
  • Under the direct supervision of a licensed applicator, safely apply herbicides to various invasive weeds using backpack sprayers.
  • Practice proper tool/equipment maintenance.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Must be able to safely and effectively work as a productive team member.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Ability to work under physically demanding conditions, including inclement weather and difficult terrain.
  • Be able to adapt to changing situations.
  • Ability to walk while carrying 50 pounds, lift 50 pounds, operate hand and power tools and other mechanical equipment for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment background check, and drug test.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge and background in habitat restoration practices including planting, planting site maintenance, and invasive weed control.
  • Experience treating invasive weeds such as Knotweed with herbicides.
  • Experience planting bare root and potted plant stock.
  • Experience using power equipment such as brushcutters.
  • Possess a valid Public Operator License through WSDA with Aquatic endorsement.
  • Experience operating an ORV.
  • Valid driver’s license, acceptable driving record.
  • Knowledge of local area of Mason County.
  • Interest in community service and the environment.
