Requirements

As an Excise Tax Examiner 2 (ETE2) within the Audit Standards & Procedures unit, you will complete financial examinations of business accounts, tax records, returns, audit reports, and reports from other agencies to determine if taxpayers are in compliance with applicable tax laws and have correctly reported their tax liability. You will also support other essential functions, including post-audit adjustments, amended audits, closing agreements, appeal determinations, and assisting other DOR staff with manual interest calculations and refund requests.

Here are some other duties:

Examine, review, and issue field audits and desk examinations.Conduct full scope review of all workpapers, exhibits, and audit narratives.Make accounting adjustments as necessary and create and issue debit or credit notices, refunds or tax assessments within established authority.Calculate penalties, interest, and other adjustments in accordance with laws and regulations.Educate stakeholders in correct reporting, business taxability, and understanding tax law.

Qualifications The required qualifications are key competencies that have been successfully demonstrated through experience or education.

To join our team, you must possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies:Information Technology Proficiency:Spreadsheet skills to use basic formulas, tables, filtering, and sorting.

  • Document skills to compose messages. Using bolding, white space, bullets, and other formatting to ensure the message is clear.
  • Ability to locate files and keep your electronic files organized.
  • Managing and responding to emails in a timely manner.

  • Research, Analysis, and Problem Solving:
    • Ability to understand and solve problems by applying intermediate analytical skills to include collecting all the relevant information and data needed to reach a conclusion.
    • Ability to synthesize data into fundamental issues and manageable components, identifying the logical outcomes from the analyses of the data collected.
    • Ability to research, interpret, and apply federal and state tax laws to determine correct tax reporting.

    Planning and Organization:

    • Experience managing multiple assignments or projects simultaneously, ensuring timely completion.
    • Ability to regularly evaluate progress on assignments and adjust organization, priority, time, method, etc. to meet deadlines.

    Communication (Written and verbal):

    • Ability to convey complex information in layman’s terms to generate understanding and reach agreement.
    • Ability to navigate challenging conversations and deliver unfavorable outcomes about tax implications to businesses and representatives in a professional manner.
    • Experience communicating effectively and professionally, in both verbal and written form.
    • Experience composing written communication that effectively convey ideas or information to the intended reader.

    • Effectively able to translate complex, technical concepts into understandable instructions.

    Preference may be granted to candidates with any combination of professional experience or education, such as:
    • Demonstrated professional experience in the above (required) competencies.
    • Four or more years of professional experience in accounting, auditing, tax compliance, or tax administration.
    • A bachelor’s degree in accounting.
    • 12 semester or 18 quarter hours of college-level accounting.
