The Iowa Department of Defense has the perfect job for you as we are hiring an Environmental Specialist to assist the State at the 185th Air Refueling Wing in Sioux City, Iowa.

What You’ll Do:

  • Manage the hazardous waste program on base through collection of various hazardous wastes from different areas on base and properly processing, containerizing, and storing said wastes.
  • Complete inspections of hazardous waste accumulation points, aboveground storage tanks, and stormwater outfalls.
  • Review and update several base Management Plans on an annual basis as required.
  • Provide training to personnel to ensure that they are aware of all their environmental responsibilities in different areas such as hazardous waste management, spill prevention, and stormwater management.
  • Collect and monitor emissions and other air quality data to ensure compliance with air quality permits assigned by the Iowa DNR.
  • Assist in the completion of spill response activities such as reporting releases to the required entities.
  • Assist in the completion of required annual shop visits with personnel to inspect the base environmental program and ensure compliance with all Air Force, Federal, State, and local environmental laws and determine the overall health of the base environmental program.
  • Review authorization requests and Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) for various hazardous materials requested by base personnel in order to determine any hazardous constituents.
  • Serve as the point of contact for various recycling efforts including paper and cardboard, glass, scrap metal, batteries, and plastic.
  • Assist in the management of the base Qualified Recycling Program by processing any funds received from recycling efforts and manage any requests for the use of any funds that are generated through the recycling program.
  • Serve on various environmental-related committees and working groups and assist in coordination of the meetings of said committees.
  • Maintain the Environmental Management Office’s web page through periodic reviews and updates of the site’s content and documents.
  • Attend environmental training courses and workshops on various subject matter to satisfy all training requirements for the position.


Location and hours: 185th Air Refueling Wing, 2920 Headquarters Avenue, Sioux City, IA 51111.

Hours: Tuesday-Friday 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in natural science

OR

an equivalent combination of experience and education substituting one year of full-time professional work in an environmental, radiation control, environmental health or food sanitation program for each year (30 semester hours) of the required education.
