Summary

This role involves leading engineering and scientific efforts to design, build, and maintain weapon systems for the Navy, ensuring high technical standards and guiding teams on complex projects.

As the department's chief engineer, you'll review work, mentor staff, and align projects with military needs.

It's ideal for experienced engineers or scientists with a strong background in defense technology who enjoy leading and problem-solving in a high-stakes environment.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, physical science, mathematics, statistics, operations research, or computer science (or equivalent)
  • At least one year of specialized experience at GS-12/13 level or equivalent, leading design and sustainment of weapon systems or components

  • Ability to review and assess technical documentation, such as root cause analyses and proposals

Full Job Description

You will serve as an ENGINEER or SCIENTIST in the Rapid Mission Integration & Interoperability Department (MX), Deputy Department Director Division (MXD) of NAVAL SURFACE WARFARE CENTER.

This position is part of the Warfare Centers Personnel Demonstration Project. The ND-05 pay band encompasses positions equivalent to the GS-14 and GS-15.

In addition to basic education requirements, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the ND-04 (GS-12/13 equivalent) grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: as a professional engineer or scientist, leading scientific or engineering efforts to design and sustain weapon systems, subsystems, or components for warfare programs.

  • You will serve as the Department Chief Engineer (CHENG) as the Department's leader in assuring the proper technical rigor and discipline is applied to all workload being executed within the Department.
  • You will utilize expert knowledge for standard, proven systems engineering technical methods, processes, and tools, and will steward department technical capabilities to meet current and future naval, joint force, and national requirements.
  • You will work with the Division Managers, Division CHENGs, Department Quality System Manager and Division Quality Focal Points, and Technical Project Managers to establish and maintain Department level policy and guidance.
  • You will execute customer funded work by periodically reviewing projects, assessing the level of technical rigor required, identifying gaps in the level of technical rigor being used, and recommending changes to be implemented.
  • You will review/assess technical documentation including but not limited to Root Cause Analysis reports, point papers, technical proposals, and acquisition documentation using the opportunity to teach personnel how to improve document preparation.
  • You will mentor and assist fellow engineers and technicians with technical matters on innovative solutions meeting system engineering and technology requirements, to analyze, understand, and quantify the technical performance of Department systems.
