Job Description

Summary

This job involves working as a senior technician focused on materials engineering for the Navy, particularly handling corrosion control, coatings, and preservation for aircraft and fleet maintenance.

You'll manage projects, conduct inspections, run a testing lab, and train others on safe and effective processes.

Full Job Description

You will serve as a ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN(MATERIALS) in the FST ENGINEERING GROUP of FLEET READINESS CENTER SOUTHWEST.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Comprehensive knowledge in the following corrosion technical processes: Masking for Coating Removal, Coating Removal via Mechanical Sanding, Coating Removal via Plastic Media Blasting, Chemical Conversion Coating Application, Masking for Coating Application, Waterborne Primer Application, Solvent-borne Primer Application, Polyurethane Topcoat Application, Rain Erosion Coating Application, Conductive Coating Application, RAM Coating Application, RAM Thickness Verification Testing, RAM Density Verification Testing, Tape Test Adhesion Testing; 2) Experience providing comprehensive technical services (i.e., testing, data, reports) in support of production or managerial decision-making; 3) Develop training curriculum and providing technical training to others on existing aircraft technical directive requirements, processes, and/or newly developed procedures; 4) Collaborates on the development of specifications, processes, and test procedures that apply a full range of principles, concepts, and manufacturing best practices (i.e., tooling, facilities, QA); 5) Collaborate with engineering teams to develop test plans, modify standard practices and adapt equipment or techniques to solve various technical problems, such as space and budgetary limitations and environmental considerations.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Major Duties:

  • You will serve as a SENIOR MATERIALS ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN in the Corrosion Division, with an emphasis on conventional coatings, specialty coatings, coating removal, corrosion control, fleet maintenance, and preservation.
  • You will assist project managers and team leads in managing technical projects within the Materials Engineering Department.
  • You will conduct site surveys and audits across the Navy enterprise to assess the adequacy of working conditions for processes such as organic paint and LO coating applications, preservation, and corrosion control.
  • You will evaluate proper instrumentation, support equipment, environmental conditions, and safety precautions.
  • You will manage a corrosion testing laboratory by coordinating efforts to maintain laboratory equipment, chemical inventory, HAZMAT and updating standard operating procedures (SOPs) for testing and ensuring tooling is calibrated as necessary.
  • You will provide formal certification training, on-the-job skills training, and informal mentorship as necessary on corrosion and coatings processes.
