This position is 2nd shift (4:00pm - 12:30pm)The purpose of the custodial work unit position is to support the university’s academic, research, residential, and public service missions by ensuring campus facilities are consistently clean, safe, sanitary, and well maintained.
This position helps provide a healthy, welcoming, and functional environment for faculty, staff, students, and visitors through the routine and specialized cleaning, maintenance, and care of campus buildings and surrounding areas, while adhering to established standards, safety regulations, and institutional policies.
A.
Duty: Crew Leader - 10% Serve as a Cleaning Crew Leader by providing day-to-day guidance and coordination for custodial staff to ensure consistent, high-quality cleaning services across assigned campus facilities.
Responsibilities include keeping staff informed of daily activities, schedules, and building-specific needs; collecting staff supply and equipment needs; and providing hands-on training and instruction to staff on proper equipment operation and approved cleaning procedures.
Guide and support staff during group cleaning projects such as event setups and teardowns, deep cleaning, and restorative cleaning activities to ensure work is completed efficiently.
Monitor building conditions and staff performance, and report facility issues, supply shortages, and staffing needs to supervisors.
Communicate relevant university, departmental, and safety information to custodial staff to support effective operations and maintain a safe, clean, and well-maintained campus environment.
B.
Duty: Space Cleaning - 55 % Perform custodial and sanitation services across campus facilities, including classrooms, offices, lecture halls, laboratories, residence halls, dining halls, recreation centers, medical school facilities, corridors, entrances, stairwells, and common areas.
Responsibilities include routine cleaning tasks such as dusting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, wiping and disinfecting surfaces, cleaning windows and water fountains, emptying trash and recycling, and resetting furniture.
In addition, perform annual deep cleaning and restorative maintenance activities, including stripping and waxing floors, shampooing and extracting carpets, and other intensive cleaning procedures to maintain the long-term appearance, safety, and functionality of campus facilities.
Complete additional cleaning and maintenance tasks as assigned to ensure a safe, sanitary, and well-maintained environment.
C.
Duty: Restrooms - 15 % Perform routine and deep cleaning of restrooms, locker rooms, and shower facilities, including disinfecting and sanitizing surfaces; sweeping, mopping, and scrubbing floors; cleaning and sanitizing toilets, urinals, sinks, mirrors, stalls, lockers, and shower areas; restocking supplies; emptying trash and recycling; and maintaining a clean, safe, and hygienic environment in accordance with established health and safety standards.
D.
Duty: Floor care - 5% Perform daily and scheduled maintenance of carpeted and hard-surface flooring, including routine cleaning, spot cleaning, and spill response; interim care such as burnishing and low-moisture carpet cleaning; and deep cleaning and restorative services including stripping, refinishing, sealing, and waxing hard floors, as well as shampooing and extracting carpets.
Responsibilities include the safe movement and replacement of furniture and equipment necessary to complete flooring maintenance in accordance with established procedures and safety standards.
E. Duty: Snow Removal - 3% Perform snow and ice removal services for building entrances, walkways, and other designated pedestrian areas to ensure safe access during winter weather conditions.
Responsibilities include shoveling, applying appropriate ice melt products in accordance with safety and environmental guidelines, and removing residual ice melt materials once snow and ice conditions have cleared.
This work may be performed outside of regularly scheduled shifts and may require availability during early mornings, evenings, nights, and weekends based on weather events and operational needs.
F. Duty: Event Cleaning - 10% Provide operational support for campus events by performing event setup, breakdown, and post-event cleaning across a variety of facilities.
Responsibilities include opening, closing, and securing bleachers; setting up, arranging, and tearing down tables, chairs, staging, and related equipment; and cleaning and restoring athletic facilities, academic spaces, residence halls, outdoor venues, and other event locations.
Support a wide range of events including athletic competitions, commencement ceremonies, meetings, entertainment and recruiting events, weddings, and other externally hosted functions, as well as performing deep cleaning and rapid turnaround cleaning for summer camps, conferences, and seasonal programs to ensure facilities are safe, clean, and event-ready.
G.
Duty: Supply ordering - 1 % Coordinate and manage custodial supply inventories by collecting supply needs from building custodial staff; preparing and submitting monthly supply orders; placing interim and project-specific supply orders as needed; and monitoring usage to maintain appropriate inventory levels.
Ensure supplies are consistently available between scheduled orders while avoiding excessive stock levels that could negatively impact departmental budgets.
H. Duty: Inspections - 1 % Conduct routine inspections to ensure safety, readiness, and compliance with university standards.
Perform monthly fire extinguisher inspections; inspect custodial equipment for proper operation and maintenance needs; review custodial rooms for cleanliness, organization, and safety; and monitor custodial supplies to ensure adequate stock levels and proper storage.
Document findings and report or address issues as needed.
